Is there any good or bad ones, or do they all do a decent job?
What registar would be recommended for a .com domain?
Network Solutions are really good, right?

If you use this forum's search function you will find a lot of specific answers, as this question is asked a couple of times each week. :)

Network Solutions is the grandaddy of all the current internet domain registrars. In the early days of the commercial internet, they won their bid to the National Science Foundation (NSF), to run the domain registry.
As the sole provider of this service, they often overlooked the customer service needs when budget allocation time came around. As a result, I used to tell people who had to deal with them that they had to approach Netsol with the same attititude as the DMV. They have gotten a little bit better since domain registration was "deregulated".
I, myself, register my domains at Register.com. I made this decision based on their size and resources. I have seen a few of the smaller registrars just suddenly drop off the face of the planet and leave their domain holders in the lurch. Very ugly. They go pop, no one gets to your site. Poor guys weren't even notified about any potential problems. Just poof!

Network Solutions is the worst. I have had to deal with several registars for Transfers and I always, I repeat always have more problems with Network Solutions than I do any body else. If you are registering a new name, then use GoDaddy. They are cheaper than register.com and networksolutions.com and namesecure.com.

I use either
http://itsyourdomain.com
or
http://dotster.com.
I have had no problems and good support at both.

I personally like to go with easyhosting.com, mainly 'cos they bill me in Canadian dollars, last check I believe it's 19.95 CAD for the 1st year.

register.com is the worst if you ever want to transfer a domain to another person, they are bumbling inadequates
www.powerpipe.com is easily my favorite and you can actually speak to a real person if you call them up :)

actually nsi's quality has gone done... at least in the billing department. I have registered several domains for myself and others and have been incorrectly billed more than once (double charges to CC :(, double refunds to CC :), etc.).
but yes, nsi is still good technically, though expensive. I really like easyhosting.com and if I'm correct they use the tucows reseller thing (I think it was opensrs.net), so others might deliver the same service for less (see whoever their partners are).

go with stargateinc.com - two or more domains for 8 bucks. Can't beat that :)
