View Full Version : How many of us are there???

I was in a bookstore the other day & I found a book called "The Top Ten Book". Basically, it was a book consisting of hundreds of top 10 lists such as top 10 richest people, most popular 2003 tv shows, etc. 1 category however was the top 10 countries with the most web hosts.
They listed the US as #1 on the list with a total of 372.4 hosts per every 1000 people. That's roughly 1 host per every 3 people in the US.
Now in 2000, the total US population was 281,421,906. That means if you go by the figure they provided, that would mean there are 93,807,302 web hosts in the US alone.
I'm assuming there was some type of an error in the way they explained this. Perhaps they meant 372.4 per every 1000 U.S. web sites or something.
Anyway though, does anyone know the actual number or ballpark estimate of web hosting companies there are out there?
Just curious because I knew there was a great deal of competition in this field but I didn't know there was this much.
Thanks in advance.

Does this count all resellers?
If it did then the number would be huge..
There are a lot of small resellers as well as the larger companies

I suppose that is possible with amount of fly-by-night hosters and resellers. It's definitely an intimidating number to some, but then again if you're established, you'll distance yourself from much of the competition.

1 out of every 3 people in the US are web hosts? Hahaha sure. Must be a mistake.

Hmm, but what if 93,807,200 new hosts enter the market every week, and the same number go out of business, you'd think we'd see alot more people trying to sell their clients at WHT. :)

Cheers

Well, according to stats provided by "PC Junkie" magazine, 1 in 3 people have direct, home access to the net, so yes, i would say those stats are very very wrong.

It has to be a mistake, cause I can tell you 1/3 people in my area don't even have an idea what a website is.

Look at the numbers or how may US citizens have PC in their home, and I think you will see that number of web hosts has to be WAY OFF!!

I do agree 93+ million hosts just don't add up right. I wonder if this includes people who don't have computers or what. I know the market can at first appear saturated...but 93.8+ million of them?

maybe they're saying ...1 out of 3 people have access to the internet ;)

The stats don't necessarily say that. It could be one person has a million fly-by-night aliases in the hosting business.

what they mey have meant was 'network hosts', as in machines (nodes) attached to the internet.

Yeah, I thought about it last night and I agree. This is what they probably meant.
I mean, lets face it. I know there are a lot of IT people out there but 1 out of 3 would be ridiculous. Heck, senior citizens probably make up about 25% of the population alone and I know very few who even know how to turn on a computer.

Numbers... who knows, but I guess they needed to come up with something. Heck, I just started a webhosting business. I'm only hosting 6 clients so they can pay for my hosting... does this list count people like me? I'd be interested to know the "real" numbers. Do we even know "for sure" how many websites exist?

LOL,

This is like something that is always passed around that by the year 2020 1 in 2 of the world's population will be Elvis impersonators if the current growth continues.

Hmm, www.elvishost.com anyone? :D

Yes, it has to be a mistake. It's just not possible.

i also think it's a mistake You THINK it's a mistake???

There cannot BE any doubt that this is hopelessly wrong -- heck, there aren't even that many COMPANIES in the US let alone those specialised in the tiny field of web hosting! (Not that it requires anything more than having a computer, Dad's credit card and a sixteen year old's arrogance. :D )

I think it's far more likely that what they may have meant is that there is a hundred million or so web hosting ACCOUNTS. That may seem a little low, but then Farmer Jo in Kansas doesn't have his own web site, even if she does have an internet account... so maybe not.

Then again, I could be wrong. Afterall, every second person in the US -- and then some -- (160m) uses the 'net. Perhaps every second one is a reseller?? :D

If they refer to 93,807,302 "web sites", it's still way too many, left alone "web hosts"...

:)

With all the company sites around, and all those millions of abandoned Geocities websites from the past, what, six or more years of the web being used intensively?

They reckon there is more than a billion web pages by now, and I am sure I read that 60% are in the US. While I wouldn't stake anything valuable on it, I figure that each web site could average six or so pages, when you include all the one-page sites from '96.

Just thinkin'. :D
