Check out: http://new.net

It seems that you need to download and install special plug-in for those extensions to work. Doesn't sound like a reliable idea to me.

Hmmm... found this in the faq

When and how can I use a .sex domain name?
The .sex domain names are currently being registered for activation in 2002. They will initially be viewed on the Internet by making a slight alteration to your web browser.

Yeah right...buy now and gone later with your money...lol

FYI, there are new TLDs (extensions) coming in soon...

This is not a scam, its part of many new .something allocated (.info .museum .whatever .sucks) instead of the really cool '.com'

As far as I am concerned, we are creating a false need here... there is no need to limit to a .com... or .something.

register it, use it... why should it end with something pre-determined?

Er. yes. buy one. then find only 5 people have the 'plugin' to use it. There are loads of new 'domain registries' using this plugin idea and quite a few gullible muppets are going for it.

First thing I noticed was that you had to goto dotsex.com not .sex to reg one :)

there are a lot of tlds out there but not all can see em.
You should try youcann.org

Yes and new.net to get their plug-in. You'd think if it was so wonderful and accessible, they'd use their own extensions, but alas, they do not.

.net names... I think it is a really, really good way to get your visitors to a site, really cool and different! Ohhhh, but not your site, their site, to get the plug-in...

On NANOG, we had this very same discussion regarding the technical validity of alternate TLDs. To make a point, I set up my DNS servers to serve .sucks and .suck domains. It wasn't long before others were asking me to keep it up and maintain the service. And so, in the halls of alternate TLDS, a new TLD domain was born. But there are several catches:

a) I'm not the only .sucks registrar.
b) Although there are some major ISPs that support it simply because they wanted their own .sucks domain, most don't.
c) If my network goes down (never has, but I'm don't want to jinx anything!), the nameservice for this TLD goes down since it's not propogated across thirteen root level servers like .COM, .NET, and .ORG.

The catches illustrate some of the many problems with the alternate TLD service. In the case of new.net, they are really risking the stability of the internet and should be beaten soundly. But that's just my opinion.

the entire idea sucks. Unless these domains are like 80% compatible, i wouldnt spend a buck on em. However thats just my opinion.

...but if it's for real, then it could totally change the way we view porn. Yippee!

We dumbing something down that couldn't get much more basic???

:D :D

On a more serious note: Why not check ICANN... that's where these things will or won't gain credibility enough to go mainstream I'm sure.

Why not? After all if you talk bandwidth and space then a major portion of the web is given over to porn... If you ask me they probably need a frigging group of TLD's.

We discussed the new.net issue sometime back...

http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=12821&highlight=pictures.inc

It's only a redirection service. You still need a dot-com/net/org to host your site.

Did anybody visit youcann.org???

There seems to be a clash with .biz domains.

Colin, new.net is not just a redirection service. You have your options.
