Hi
I would like to host my own site.
I have a dual PIII/1Ghz WITH 512Mb ram and 9GB Ultra2 SCSI running MS Windows 2000.
The connection will be cable modem with a speed of 256Kbps up-link and 1Mbps down link.

Will this work, or will I need a faster link to the internet?

Many Thanks

hmiguelito ;)

That will be fine. Just make sure to keep up on MS IIS security bulletins!

Qslack just meant that you need to take care of your security. Any MS OS is usually more vulnerable than any other OS.

You should be fine. You have plenty of power to run any program; the thing would be the amount of bandwidth available. You will fine as long as you don't have many simultaneous connections.

A couple of things...

Unless you've been assigned a static IP, you are probably gonna have trouble keeping the site visible to the world(look up dynamic dns).

The specs you listed for your pc are adequate for running a forum.

IIS Security Bulletins. If you don't know what these are, I hope you're not going to do any work on this pc that's running as a site. MS+IIS is a combination that is asking for someone to attack your machine. IIS requires constant care and feeding to keep your machine secure. (Not that any other combination requires less, but this is commonly overlooked on non-unix.)

Bandwidth. If you get more than about 40 concurrent users on your forum, they'll be d/l'ing at less than 56k. That blazing 1mbit is only good for you, doesn't do jack for your users.

Firewall. Get one. Period. If you're running any machine with fast internet access not behind a firewall, you're begging for trouble.

hi bert :)
so how many simultaneous connections do you think this can handle?
is this related with bandwith?
tx ;)

Yes, this is absolutely related to bandwidth. slade said about 40, but I don't think so, I think maybe 15 to 20 tops. You have to think about the fact that you are limited to 256Kbps. Your fast speed is not good upstream.

This can off course be a very relative figure, you could have maybe 40, 50 or even 100, but it would slow their browsing considerably.

hello slade :)

- yes one static IP np here :D

- firewall also

- as you said my main problem is bandwith, but browsing is not the same as downloading is it?

tx 4 your help

just one last question
are simultaneous connections the same as currently browsing the boards or # of online users?
tx in advance :)

Simultaneous Connections = Number of users browsing your site at one time.

Why not have that nice server colocated?

There are many companies that will colocate your server. Search the forums for "colocate" or "colocation." You will come up with many threads discussing many different companies.

If you would like to be able to visit the data center and have physical access to your server, I would reccomend searching www.colosource.com for a company near you.

---- And make sure to check you cable company's Terms Of service. Most do not allow running any kind of server.
