Hi

I'm looking for a thread on IP numbers (and more specifically advantages and disadvantages on one account/multiple domain hosts) but, like NT, the search rejects IP.

Anyone know where I can find one? Chicken, Kiwi?

Thanks a lot

I have often wondered alot about this myself, but Apache seems to be about the best resource guide on it.

I think the only real disavantages are no AnonFTP and Secure Server for a Name based IP Domain, the Old browser error I dont think is much of an issue, since there are barely anyone using them. Here is the Apache Link;

Try searching on virtual host

Thanks for your help.

One thing I was trying to find out about was the possibility of virtually hosted sites being assessed penalties by search engines due to attempted search engine spamming by another site on the same IP address.

Here's a quote from the (very informative) http://spider-food.net

Since some engines monitor IP Addresses, that means that if just one of those other web sites spams the engines and gets penalized, it is possible that the penalty could be accessed against the entire IP Address and not just that one web site.

Has any host ever had experience of this or is it something you practically don't need to worry about?

Rgds

My opinion on this is that you have similar risks with dedicated IPs. Since IPs are recycled, the past owner of the site (in which the IP was associated) might have caused a problem. Or the entire block could have been tagged as problematic.

In all, there are quite a few IP addresses and I don't think it is much of a concern, unless you have a problem, which I doubt you'd have (just playing the odds on that, you know).
