View Full Version : The year is 1999, what would you do?
xlbox 10-02-2003, 06:40 PM I was just day dreaming this evening and I thought about all the things I would have done back in 1999 if I knew all the money was going to disappear. In those days I was with Flycast (anyone remember them?!) and earning around $4-$5CPM on simple banners.
If you were transported back in time to 1999 and forced to relive the last 4 years - what would you do differently? For me, I would have doubled the number of web sites I had online and not blown the money I made on stupid purchases :/
etogre 10-02-2003, 06:43 PM Would have skipped ASP and gone straight to PHP.
xlbox 10-02-2003, 06:44 PM LOL! What about skipping CGI/Perl too? Oh yeah, I just rembered I would have tried to get more free Yahoo listings :/
mahinder 10-02-2003, 06:44 PM i think i will make some porn web site and will make few $$$$$$$$
Q_Max 10-02-2003, 06:51 PM Mortgage my house, sell all my personal posessions, and buy as much stock in Ebay as possible and dump it all the day before Christmas.
dapon 10-02-2003, 07:05 PM I would have bought as much of that $25/share Verio stock with my employee discount as I could. Who knew that some company named NTT would soon be paying $68/share for it.:D
As soon as we found out of course we were in a blackout period and couldn't buy or sell.
blue27 10-02-2003, 07:12 PM I would have sold my restaurants, mortgaged my house, put the children up for adoption and put everything into a young upstart company called IBM.
Wait a minute, that was 1969.
1AsianChic 10-02-2003, 07:30 PM i was so stupid back then. I was paying more than $600/2 yrs of hosting from communitech for only 300MB space :( and $35/yr for domain from netsol
   Now i'm paying 10 times less than that and I'm happy with it
ahhh i wish i could go back and get my $600 back
:D

Yeah, might not have been such a great idea in 1999. But at least you would be rid of all of your material things.:)

Ouch...I just went through that 2 years ago. It was fianl in Jan. of this year. You are so right though. She even kept the personalized license plate on her car. It say PONCYS, my last name. She lives with her new bofriend. Why in the hell would she want that. But the courts gave it to her because it is part of the car and she gets the car. I know she will trash it, she just wanted to get in another little dig.
CactusCounty 10-02-2003, 07:44 PM I went through it several years ago. She got basically everything. I got my clothes, some of my books, records and CDs and the three pieces of the stereo that she couldn't figure out how to use.
Oh, yeah, and her bills for most of the next year.
Believe it or not, I'm not bitter about it. It seemed like a fair trade to be rid of her.
Joseph_M 10-02-2003, 07:47 PM What would I do....well I'd not have gone to Greece, not have got in bed with that girl, and would still be with the girl down the road instead of someone who lives so so so far away (other side of the country).
Kimmikat 10-02-2003, 07:57 PM Do like the Prince song and party!!!!!!!
I would have registered rackshack.net.
SoftWareRevue 10-02-2003, 08:28 PM Maybe I woulda brought a computer.
Joseph_M 10-02-2003, 08:30 PM I would've registered webhostingtalk.com and made a place for everyone to moan about their hosts and for 8 year olds to offer their 1TB Space & 100TB Bandwidth services for $1 per millenium

As for myself... gee, I'd probably done the same as someone else had mentioned: "Skip ASP and gone straight to PHP"... Imagine all the possibilities of my PHP potential today if I didn't even waste my time with ASP :)
PlacidHost 10-03-2003, 01:03 AM I'd predict the coming of everything between then and now. Then sell books and make BILLIONS! Oh yeah, and stop harry potter from ever happening. That book = Satan™.
NE-Andy 10-03-2003, 01:06 AM Originally posted by PlacidHost
That book = Satan? No man, the book is not Satan... The book is a major tree killer, which causes tree hugger activists to go on protests and waste everyone's time and money. If you ask me, it's more evil than Satan!

Muhahah! :stickout: I guess if you'd done that they would have gone with ev1servers in the first place and saved themselves the effort of rebranding... ;)
Reality Hosting 10-03-2003, 08:30 AM I would've started my hosting business earlier.

Yes I remember them well :D :D
Boy, how I wish they were still around ;)
Qizeny 10-04-2003, 01:20 AM No one has said the obvious yet.
I'd short a whole buncha stock.

Hehehehehe.... Enron.... Mawhahaha :)
Aussie Bob 10-04-2003, 02:11 AM I would do nothing different than what I did in 1999. If I did, then I wouldn't be where I am now. :D
XGenesis 10-04-2003, 08:02 AM If i could go back in time I would go register everyones web-hosting domain name and sell them to you for triple the price.
