View Full Version : UK webhost required
poncho 08-24-2001, 09:19 AM Hi,
I'm wondering if anyone can recommend a UK webhost. These are my requirements:
* Ability to register mydomain.org.uk No charge for moving this at a later date if I wish.
* At least ten @mydomain.org.uk email addresses.
* POP3 + webmail access.
* PHP + cgi-bin
* 50Mb hosting space
* Ability to host subdomain.mydomain.org.uk would be nice.
* ssh or telnet access.
* FTP access.
Thanks in advance for any tips you've got (especially if they're first-hand experiences of the host),
poncho
Studio-51 08-24-2001, 06:48 PM ignore this post - which was offering our services (against forum rules).

GordonH 08-25-2001, 06:18 AM Hello
You will be struggling to find a UK webhost with SSH/TELNET access.
In a recent discussion on one of the uk.net newsgroups between the different hosts there turned out to be very few offering it due to abuse.

Are you looking for UK based servers (if so why?) or a company that bills in ŁUK sterling?

poncho 08-28-2001, 04:59 AM No, I'm not bothered about where the servers are (as long as they're fast with minimal downtime), rather I am looking for someone who bills in sterling, and more importantly, has a UK telephone support line (not at 50p/min either)
I wasn't sure whether any US hosting companies provided UK phone support.

Why should this be? How is it possible to properly debug CGI scripts without shell access?
Admittedly all permission changing and file transfer can be done through FTP, but I would have thought that shell access would be near essential for a site which goes beyond a few static .html files.

GordonH 08-28-2001, 05:24 AM Hello
East Coast US servers will be almost as fast as servers in the UK which are not in London with a direct connection to LINX.
For example VDI is sub 100ms from here and servers in the midlands can be around 80ms.
As for the SSH issue, a lot of the people requesting SSH in the UK are wanting to use it for other purposes, not debugging scripts.
We provide it on a case by case basis but most UK hosts have a blanket "no" to telnet or SSH as they are providing hosting services not shell accounts.

yipeedoo 08-28-2001, 05:41 AM i came across this webhost from Uk... nice offers..

poncho 08-28-2001, 05:47 AM I have come across ghoulnet.com who seem to provide most of the features I require. Their website seems informative (i.e. it told me everything I needed to know). Does anyone have any experience with them?
Any knowledge much appreciated.

GordonH 08-28-2001, 06:08 AM Look in alt.internet.providers.uk
There is currently a thread about this.

timbo 08-28-2001, 08:51 AM Do a search for UK HOST ---> but hold on, you cannot as UK is only two letters and this board will not let you search on anything less then 3 letters... Arrrrrgggghhhhhhhhhh! ;)
Toons 08-28-2001, 09:02 AM Hi,
Said before, and worth saying again www.bigbytes.co.uk (now at www.webhostingguide.co.uk)
From memory this also lists isp's who allow telnet/ssh access.

ComplexMind 08-29-2001, 08:44 AM I don't know how much you were planning to pay, but DSVR (www.dsvr.co.uk) provide virtual servers with all those features and more.
Check out my uptime ;)
1:37pm up 175 days, 6:02, 0 users, load average: 0.52, 0.31, 0.30
Strong support too...
