View Full Version : Most powerfull 1U server?
dabystru 08-24-2001, 08:55 AM What is the most powerfull server you can fit in 1U?
So far I found this (http://www.gotocol.com/intelsrmk2.html):
Intel SRMK2 Server Platform
2 x 1 GHz Intel Pentium III processors
4 GB of PC133 ECC RAM
2 x 73.6 GB Utra160 SCSI
Anything better? Need to fit as much as possible into 1U, price does not matter.
ReliableServers 08-24-2001, 10:23 AM Thats the best I have seen also. Not really much room to add anything eles....not like anything else is needed with that setup thou.
Dont forget RAID. Either run those two drives in RAID1 or add a third drive and run RAID5.
Jedito 08-24-2001, 11:24 AM I found in http://www.qsol.com/ the same 1U a lot cheaper than in http://www.gotocol.com.
I never used their service, so I can't make a recommendation.
I'm just talking about price.
I hope this help
joe52 08-24-2001, 11:30 AM Pogolinux has a new 1u that has dual Athlons and up to 4 SCSI drives. I have no idea how they fit all that into a 1u chassis, but it's the PerformanceWare 1400 on this page:
http://www.pogolinux.com/systems/servers/PerformanceWare/index.html
I've have no experience with this system, but it does have more in it thatn any other 1u that I've come across.

mikeknoxv 08-24-2001, 04:40 PM If you really need a powerful server I would reccomend simply obtaining a 2U+ server. Rack space is not usually very expensive.
Walter 08-24-2001, 05:47 PM How would you like a 1U server with
two Dual-CPU systems, all in one 1U server?
http://www.racksaver.com/products/RS1200Matrix.asp
Each system operates independent of each other. They just reside in the same chassis to save space. We can fit (160) Intel Pentium III 866MHz+ processors or (80) AMD Athlon 1GHz+ processors into a 44U rack and still have room for the networking equipment and PDUs
(i have no conneciton to racksaver)

(i have no conneciton to racksaver) i wonder if you can service one while the other continues running?
i thought dual tualatin 1.2ghz with 512k L2 caches and Dual Athlon 1.2 MP servers in 1U were up there :)

Hi, Chris.
Never had such one ;) Software-wise: of course, hardware-wise I guess: yes. Probably they have two independent power supplies. What I really do not know is how they fit all that in 1U

Take a look at:
LogiCerv Technology
www.logicerv.com
Four servers in 1U case.
Walter 08-24-2001, 06:49 PM Eek, that's even better!
Wonder when someone manages to top this, maybe 8 servers in 1U?

Four servers in 1U case. actually that's 4 x single cpu servers as opposed to racksavers 2 x dual cpu servers.. still only can manage 4 cpus in a 1U

mikeknoxv 08-24-2001, 08:16 PM lol, wow. Is that safe?
Cyberpunk 08-25-2001, 12:13 AM I recently saw apost discussing new serverblade technology.
2U case that can house up to 24 or 32 hot pluggable server blades, each with a crusoe 633 or similar with 512mb ram each and 2x 10 or 30GB drives, there is a 1ghz blade coming soon as well. What about clustering one of those fully loaded??

Is there such a thing as a beowulf cluster web server :)

Cyberpunk 08-29-2001, 06:33 PM The chip was specifically designed for running linux as far as I know, and mobile linux (emulates x86 code if needed). Has a very low power consumption if I recall so it probably runs quite cool.
Well thought out peice of kit though isnt it, especially the hot swap and cloning facility.
reloadnet 08-30-2001, 06:11 AM This is supposed to be the quickest 1U server available currently based on the Athlon MP.
It's quite a good review.

Take a look at Compaq Alpha servers. They have a 1U model available, we got it on test for 2months; it realy blew all alternatives a way ;)
It comes with TRU64 Unix, just compile apache on it as webserver.
