View Full Version : Co-location in Portland, OR
Crash 08-24-2001, 03:09 AM Good day everyone,
Does anyone know of a good isp/host to co-locate a cobalt raq in Portland, Oregon or Washington?
Thanks for your input!

StephenRS 08-24-2001, 03:02 PM FYI - Portland didn't have true "local peering" last time I checked (two weeks ago). There was a story in the Portland paper about it...
Meaning that if you put yourself there, you may actually be routing via Seattle / California.

In that case, do you have any recommendations for Seattle?
Thanks!

StephenRS 08-25-2001, 07:21 PM No :) Seattle STINKS for co-location. It is all HIGH-END, no affordable stuff. I send all my servers out of town. The cities I have found the best deals in: NYC (Actually 'Jersey), Orlando, Burbank, LA, Dallas, Phoenix, Kansas City.
I do co-location, as I run mostly Windows 2000 servers -- and most hosts only provide good deals on dedicated if you run Linux.
I can't find a place in Seattle that will even CONSIDER $40 + bandwidth for a 1u server.
It costs me under $100 to UPS overnight a 1U server fully loaded. More like $90... including $1500 insurance.
I can put servers in TWO or THREE cities for the price of putting one here, which is eactly what I'm doing.
==========
Internet Arena in Portland (as suggested earlier in this thread) is cheaper than any place I've found in Seattle... I passed on them, as they don't break out the bandwidth pricing as much as a like. They seem only interested in lower-bandwidth sites, which would limit growth... $25/GB - give me a break -- at that price I'll go elsewhere.
Well, if capped bandwidth isn't an issue, then check out http://www.cm2.com/
StephenRS:
I looked at colo in Seattle and bandwidth pricing isn't too bad in megabit plus quantities.... although, it is sickening that for about two to three times as much as most Seattle providers want for one server, you can get a cabinet in the Westin building.

A friend of mine had his internet connection through internet arena, and he ran into some problems.... mainly outages. I know they had been bought out by another company recently, which might explain some growing pains? I even checked out their facility, which is really run down and unorganized. Lots of cat 5 cables, power cords and surge protectors all over the place, not to mention client servers easily accessed by anyone who collocates there. I understand why they are the cheapest in town.
With the cost hosting companies like rackshack.net offer for their services, I was hoping to find something similar in my area. Internet arena has a better ping from Portland than rackshack does, but there setup makes me nervous. I don't think I can risk someone messing with my server, or my clients web sites.
Any further suggestions are greatly appreciated :)

StephenRS 08-26-2001, 05:52 PM JTY: So they are offering 512K link that is unmetered? Meaning -- that is actually pretty good for $200/month.

If this is truly 500Kbps full duplex, that would actually be good for the site I'm looking to host -- as the site does about equal bandwidth in and out (unusual).

They are located in Wilsonville, OR 97070.
I'm not sure how far are them from your place.
