View Full Version : Co-Lo's in Northern Virginia?
nexpoint 08-23-2001, 04:26 PM Got a quick question --
Any members here own/operate colocation facilities in the Northern Virginia area?
Just curious to know who is out here. Know of a few like Superb, and the backbones UUnet, Sprint, etc.
Vortech 08-24-2001, 12:07 AM There should be able 20 up there or so.. I am from Lynchburg VA i moved to FL about 5 years ago so there may be more now..
nexpoint 08-24-2001, 12:30 AM Vortech...check your PMs
RikRok 08-25-2001, 01:34 AM Since this area is near and dear to my heart and experience. There are _lots_ of colocations available -- not all good though:
Abovenet - [MFNX - maybe bankrupt]
PAIX [MFNX - maybe bankrupt]
Exodus - [EXDS -maybe bankrupt soon]
Level 3
Verio
DIGEX/UUNET/WCOM
Sprint
Primus [something - maybe bankrupt soon]
AiNET
Qwest
AT&T
And a bunch of smaller companies that I don't know if they are any good or not. Just about anybody based in this area will try and sell you colo.. Are you looking for a national network or the lowest price?
Rik
nexpoint 08-25-2001, 01:45 AM We're looking to host half a rack to a rack of servers locally and still stay affordable. The national network would be good, we would prefer UUnet but would like to keep our options open. Cost is going to be a key, but I also realize that colocation is not a cheap server -- especially with the raised floor, backup, etc.
RikRok 08-25-2001, 01:50 AM Yeah, I hear you.
No one wants to overpay for anything. I would stay away from colo centers that don't let you bring other people's circuits in. It keeps them from trying to be competitive about your business.
Are you a high bandwidth user and need the BW or just want the reliability of a big datacenter?
Rik
nexpoint 08-25-2001, 01:57 AM We'll be the standard hosting bandwidth user. We'll have probably 12-15 servers with 5-6meg line going to them in 2-3 months.
To start we'll have 6 servers and somewhere around 512-768k line going to them. Any suggestions?
RikRok 08-25-2001, 02:08 AM I don't think I am allowed to mention any specific recommendations on this forum.

Just take a quick drive (maybe a long one :D) around Dulles, Herndon, Reston, and Tysons Corner...you'll see more data centers and colo centers here than anywhere else in the world (besides San Jose, CA...but their data centers are dropping after the dot-bomb's started falling).
There's also 1 or 2 centers from DataCentersNow! and AOL has a $580 million facility near Manassas...not sure they do colo there though :D
nexpoint 08-28-2001, 12:26 PM As anyone used DataCentersnow?
How about pricing, anybody actually inquired about colo there?

Well, they usually lease their entire buildings out...for about $1.2 million per month. That's one hefty colo bill :D:D:D
I'm not sure if anyone's occupying their Manassas center yet (I think they just finished it).
nexzt 08-28-2001, 03:34 PM Yeah, I've seen the data center.. its about 5 mins from our Office :) its a very big building.. nice looking too.. looks to have about 6 or 7 floors in it..

I think it's actually a 3 story building with 12-foot ceilings on each floor. The floors are quite a few extra feet thick since they have to be able to support all of those servers.
