I am looking to register a domain this evening, but I wanted to see what registrars everone likes. All my current domains are through www.discountdomainregistry.com, but I would like to pay less than $14.95 if possible so that's why I want suggestions.

Thanks,
Michael

Go daddy looks good... do you know if their control panel allows me to administrate everything (name severs, contacts, etc.) automatically?

Ok, I have a new question... I want an expired domain that says this in it's record:

Record last updated on 04-Nov-2000.
Record expires on 17-Aug-2000.
Record created on 16-Aug-1997.
Database last updated on 23-Aug-2001 05:02:00 EDT.

I don't seem to be able to register it. Shouldn't this domain be available for registering? Could the data record be wrong?

GoDaddy's control panel allows you to do anything except change the Registrant's (owner's) name.

As for the expired domain thing, there have been some new rules initiated about them. When I remember what they were, exactly, I'll be back. But, I'd bet on someone else clearing this up before I wake up ;)

Domain drops have been put on hold at the registry level if the domains are dropped outside the registrars 45 day grace period.

Yeah... but this domain expired over 1 year ago... maybe I am missing something, but does this really apply?

It's possible, if the domain is with NSI.

Michael No. I think TheOp, in his haste to help, missed the expiration date of the domain (much like myself).
If you're reading fast, it's easy to just go by the last date you see "Database last updated on 23-Aug-2001 05:02:00 EDT"
Have you tried a different registrar? Maybe the one you used has incorrect information on file. Or, maybe it's not expired at all.

Well, I thought it was 2001 at first (before I posted earlier) too! :)

I have checked the whois at two other registrars...

One shows the same expiration date...

The other just shows "unavailable".

It's rather frustrating... I am starting to form conspiracy theories.

As an aside, TheOp mentioned a 45 day grace period... is that something required by ICANN of all registars?

So, that means on the 46th day after expiration I should be able to register an expired domain?

I have never registered an expired domain before, hence what may be simple questions.

The control panel looks like something someone threw together in a half an hour. I think I'll pass for now.

$20 dollars is too much on today's internet! :) Like I said, right now I am paying $14.95 and looking to go cheaper. Thanks anyway.

Stargate has, since, updated their control panel features to allow the user to change everything.
Including, but not limited to, the domain's registrant.

I recommend Dotster, they have a decent reseller API.

Does anybody know of a page similar to the following that allows for checking multiple domains at once.

https://bulkregister.com/cgi-bin/checkDomains.cgi

This page isn't returning all results (which could be a filter of some sort) and I would like to find another page like it so that I can check domains without typing them in one at a time! :)

Thanks,
Michael

Try stargateinc.com domainxpress service, it allows you to check as many as you want.

I used stargate once and it took over 4 days for the dns to propagate. Your mileage may vary.

DNS propagation is at the registry level, not at the registrar.

Internic WHOIS can run a few days behind depending on when the registry does it's updates.

My mistake, propagation was the wrong term. The problem did turn out to be on their end. Stargate 'claimed' my name servers and wouldn't let anyone change them.

I have had great experiences with Dotster (http://www.dotster.com) and Joker (http://www.joker.com)

Thanks. That helps. I also found https://www.dotster.com/Register/RegOptions/Bulk/. I've written a CGI script to compile and format domains for either form (yes, I'm a geek).

Does anybody know of a place where you can run expiration checks (a whois of sorts) on multiple domains... without all the fluff (admin name, etc)?

As far as choosing a registrar goes... I am leaning toward www.stargateinc.com at this point. $8.00 a domain is great and they don't require a huge amount of registrations to get this low price. I have to renew 6 domains next month and transferring them will save me $41.70 which I could then use to register 5 new domains :)! Besides the savings, I get the one web page, URL forwarding, and one email address... all of which will be useful.

If you can point out a better deal, feel free, but nothing else I have looked at stacks up... yet.

By the way, did anybody have an answer my question a few posts back... "So, that means on the 46th day after expiration I should be able to register an expired domain?..." As an aside, an expiration should be an expiration... I don't get a 45 day grace period on my milk and people should not get a 45 day grace period on their domains! :) *Maybe* they should get a few days grace... just like milk ( ;) ), but not 45 days.
