Does anybody know any software where I can do live web broadcasting?

I'm not sure how the whole broadcasting thing works, but I will (hopefully) be broadcasting through a (windows OS) laptop with a mic and uploading to a (redhat linux) server, where people should be able to listen from.

I am justing wondering how to do this, as I need to do it but I don't know how.

Try checking out Shoutcast DNAS. One of my friends does the same thing you do, and he uses Shoutcast.

I believe the url is www.shoutcast.com. Yeah, that's it.

There was a beautiful time when there was MyCaster.com. Its not there anymore. It was just as easy as downloading their small client and drag and dropping MP3 files into the playlist. I even won a prize for the best Top40 station back then... a free web cam.

I think Shoutcast.com might be the thing you're looking for now.

I remember MyCaster.com, yeah, it was a beauty on the net. Oh well. SHOUTcast is the thing now.

I lovesd MyCaster! It still works, you just have to use the old version, and it's cracked.

Where can we get it man?? And how would people connect to it? Not from their server obviously? I remember I had a direct link to my station somewhere, but its lost now.

They connect through yourIP:8888 . Just need to open that port. Gimme an hour or two and I'll put it up on my site. I don't have much bandwidth though, so if anyone wants to donate a server and some bandwidth, by all means do, the file is only like 2-3MB, maybe less.

What sort of streaming did you want to do?
I'd recomend:
Real server run on Linux but you get limited to 1mbs, best quality tho.
Real server uses a lot of resources too but it'll now work with Windows Media encoder as well and Real Publishers.
Anyway thats commercial.
Opensource or free is shoutcast + winamp, which now support video too.
As a low cost alternative P2P broadcasting is a good alternative, check out www.peercast.org
