Hi all,
I'm in need of a cheap UK based webhost (with prices in GBP). I also need the option to pay by cheque or Solo card. The following specs are needed:

>Between 20-35mb of space
>A decent monthly bandwidth allocation (more than 1gb would be sufficient)
>Option to transfer a domain for free.

Adavnced features such as PHP and CGI are not needed. Al I want is cheap, reliable, ad-free webhosting :)

Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

www.ghoulnet.com

I have 2 accounts with them, and haven't really had any cause for complaint in around a year. 5Gb transfer for only £50/year is a steal in the UK. They have been around a long while and are recommended even by other hosts.

Good luck.

You'll learn!

I know how you feel.
Seeing every other hosting company mentioned apart from yours gets a bit wearing after a while.
Its one of these things:

"To those who have - more shall be given."

The usual UK suspects seem to come up all the time and not many others get a look in.
My advice is to plough the lonely furrough.
Concentrate on aquiring customers who stay, not the ones who flit from host to host every few weeks or those who want all the features of a dedicated server for £10 a month.

We don't actually bother much with the UK market as people expect to be able to treat shared hosting accounts as a developer environment and demand PHP recompiles and all sorts of things that you really need your own server for.

We have much more success in the US/Canadian market.

There's a good list of UK hosts at www.bigbytez.co.uk

It'll give you somewhere to start to get an idea of prices and the sort of deals you can expect for your money.

It never ceases to amaze me how people consider the UK to be expensive for hosting. Yes, data transfer in the UK is a little more expensive in the UK (I actually saw a UK host charging £5 per mb! £5000 per GB per month, LOL) but you can find UK hosting deals starting at £10 or £20 per year whereas most US deals seem to work out at a similar price per month.

Hello John
Our UK and US pricing is identical (just rounded up or down to make it xx.95).

Although bandwidth is more expensive over here I got a good deal on colocation so it brought the overall price per year per server down to about the same as we are paying in the US.

We're putting a new rack in Telecity Manchester in October and we've had some fantastic quotes for 1mbit and 2mbit lines. This year had seen alot more competition on the wholesale bandwidth front. US bandwidth into the UK is increasing and getting better in quality. All in all it's good for the UK!
