View Full Version : cobalt Vs Plesk
smoats 08-22-2001, 05:37 PM Hello guys,
I just wanted to get the forums opinion on compareing Plesk V2.0 with the cobalt interface. There will soon be a cobalt to plesk migration tool.
What are the good, bad and ugly comments? Any features you'd like, anything you don't like? Things cobalt does better, things plesk does better?
Sam
Aloha
well one of my biggest gripes about cobalt is that the way email users are created if I choose webmaster or honu or ?? it is gone across the whole raq this is a very bad thing as most everyone wants an info@dom.com
plesk seems pretty darn cool to me have only played with the demos.
I would rather run a true pIII machine with plesk but the rackshack deal is hard to beat for static sites and images etc...

Have your users create an alternate user name (info2, info3, etc.) then use info as an alias.
SoftWareRevue 08-22-2001, 07:11 PM :disagree: Cobalt :disagree: :(
:agree: Plesk :agree: :D
mikeknoxv 08-22-2001, 07:35 PM Plesk's control panel seems to be more feature-filled. Cobalt's control panel seems to be more user-friendly. I would prefer Plesk over Cobalt, but not everyone has the $800. ;)

yeah I know it is a bad way they handle i trather than making a DB out of users and using it that way
I know Plesk you cna bypass that issue
I am pretty lucky as I set up all my clients etc...
(most of my good clients are not on a raq) but I am always curious what hosts tell customers that sorry the info@domain.com is allready taken or do they tell there customers to use some kind of pre I assign a 3 letter code to all my domains on my raq (I have around 50 domains on my raq) still kinda a hassle
any thoughts
OH Chris I really like your site :agree:
I like the green and blue and the fact is is very sharp and clean nice and simple
and seems not to be a site that you can say oh yeah that was done durring this year ;) because of this certain look
mikeknoxv 08-22-2001, 08:37 PM Honu,
That's probably one of the better ways to deal with the problem. I still havn't decided what I'm going to do about it.
Chris' site is pretty nice. Simple and clean.

I am looking into replacing cpanel w/ plesk and plesk isnt that expensive.
Aloha
Cpanel seems to be overpriced for me
it does not look good & still hear a lot of negatives (as with all control panels)
I want a cp I can buy and use for all my domains for one cost also want something simple clean
Plesk is still my favorite it also handles the emailuser names well I can repeat all I want (in the demo at least)
I have a demo to install just no time to install it ;)

JBIZ718 08-22-2001, 09:44 PM Well
We are in the process of getting a partnership with them
Plesk 2 really is solid, and are looking at P2 to be are head control panel.
It really blows away ensim's appliance, but is not in there server xchange catagory
Joe
smoats 08-22-2001, 09:58 PM Hello,
Us also. There people our good and there product is good.
Ensim could not give us a solution that would work with out dedicated hosting model. Plesk fits perfectly.
Sam:D
JBIZ718 08-22-2001, 10:13 PM Well im not sure why.
Ensim has a great product no doubt and there Server xchange model is solid, but there Basic Appliance is just ok
Joe
DHWWnet 08-22-2001, 11:29 PM Plesk :karate:vs:karate: Cobalt
Plesk Wins :D
Seriously though, I prefer plesk over cobalt, we tested it in one of our servers and it is okay, as soon as we finish moving around 20GB of data on one of our plesk server, we are going to install the version 2 w/ RH 7.1.
Aloha, Sam
the one thing to remember here is that Plesk will work on a faster better machine a RAQ is an apliance a basic machine that can handle some basic traffic I would not try to run to much on it
if you get serious and wanted to run some high end stuff a lot of BB etc...
you would need a more pwerfula machine
you could run plesk on a dual pIII 1000 with 2 gigs of memory and ultra 160 SCSI raid 5
this is so much farther ahead then a cobalt could ever dream of
just another angle to look at
if you are not going to be doing tons of sites etc.. a cobalt bang for buxk at rackshack is hard to beat
if you are going to do more hosting or have intensive aps
go with a plesk on a real server that can grow with you and expand
keep us posted and best of luck
checkall 08-23-2001, 02:50 AM Does Plesk do automated client signup?
wired1 08-23-2001, 02:54 AM One other big plus for Plesk, like Honu was saying, is you can also run a Dual PIII, 2 gigs of ram, and ultra 160 SCSI raid 5 on FreeBSD :D
mikeknoxv 08-23-2001, 06:40 AM Well, if you were to purchase the unlimited domain version of Plesk, it would cost you $948. If you payed monthly for liscenses as some dedicated sellers offer you will more than likely end up paying this much in less than a year of use.
smoats 08-23-2001, 12:49 PM Thanks for the feedback :-)..... my opinion to but I
just wanted to make sure that it was shared by others
before we start yanking our companys plans around.
