View Full Version : DNS problems and mad...
Hello fellow WHT members, I'm not sure if this the right forum...but I am having some problems.
Okay, I ordered a virtual server from Servercentral.net, ($85 plan) and was planning to host numerous domains on it.
I do not have a nameserver, and do not know how to get one.
So, I asked Jordan (owner) about directing my domains to his dns.
Here is the reply I recieved:
If you have domains that are not with us or enom, and you need to use our nameservers (eg. you can use register.com's if you have domains with them) the charge is $15 per year.
Now, why would I pay $15 for each domain I direct to their nameservers, when I could just buy domains from them? I just do not understand this.
Well, because they are of no help, I'm asking one of you helpful ;) WHT members, if I could use someone's dns to direct my domains to it.
Unless I find a nameserver to direct my domains to, or find a way to create my own dns for free...can anyone, please help me? Just post here or email me.
-Andrew
wired1 08-22-2001, 12:07 AM You can list 5 domains for free at zoneedit, extra ones if you need more than 5 are like $10 bucks a year. Nice service and quick.
http://www.zoneedit.com/
I would need more than 5... =(
Abu Mami 08-22-2001, 12:31 AM 1) you should be able to host your own DNS server
2) who needs a host like that, tell 'em to sit on it and rotate
MCHost-Marc 08-22-2001, 01:54 AM Correct me if i'm wrong (its late night here) ...but they charge you $15 if you want to use their nameservers?! :eek2: By getting a virtual server, you should at least get your own private nameservers. If you need any help registering your own nameservers, just let me know and i'll help you. :)

You ordered an account with a hosting company and it is not allowing you to use their nameserver to point your domains on thier server.
I will suggest you to change your host if possible. If you want to stick with the same then arrange your own name server.

Andrew, first about the quote... are you sure he is charging you $15/domain and not just $15/yr. for either access to his nameservers, or maybe he'd just alias to the nameservers and you'd have to emil/subit the domains you'd like hosted? I really couldn't figure this out from the quote.
You do have a couple of choices. You can use an outside nameserver service like http://mydomain.com (as was mentioned) or run it on the machine itself (register the nameserver, etc.)
Which are you interested in, and can you firm up the question about the quote. Honestly, if it is just $15/yr. and he has multiple nameservers it might not be that bad of a deal and it could be more durable than running it yourself. I'm also not sure of your background (as far as running your own DNS), so for that reason, using mydomain or letting him do it might be a better choice at this point, at least to get you going.
Okay, sorry that I didn't reply. Here is what I found in my email box:
If you have domains that are not with us or enom,
>and you need to use our nameservers (eg. you can use register.com's if you
>have domains with them) the charge is $15 per year. There are also free
>nameserver services out there, but ours are extrememely fast and update in
>realtime, so we charge for them.
I'm pretty sure he meant $15/year per domain...what do you guys think?
I tried using mydomain.com, but when I add a domain, it does not give me a nameserver to direct it to.
I'm going to try ZoneEdit and see how it goes :o
valkaryn 08-23-2001, 02:18 PM DooD,
How many domains do you have? I have nameservers I that I can help you out with. <EDIT>
I currently will be hosting around 5-6 domains at this moment, but I will be hosting more later on.
I do not wish to have any other charges though...

I'd ask him, not us to be sure. Could be either. As for mydomain.com not 'giving you a nameserver to direct it to' -I'm not entirely sure what you mean. Mydomain would *be* the nameserver, you'd direct your domains to your server IP or dedicated IP that you set up on the server for that domain.
The actual DNS version of mydomain.com is http://www.mydns.com and maybe that is what you are looking for. I believe mydomain.com is more for web forwarding and email forwarding, etc., while mydns is for full DNS control.

This doesn't look like a problem.
Send me the following information for each of your domains and I'll set you up:
domain name
hostname and IP for each host
mailserver(s) for domain
I suggest that you email this to me directly at valkaryn@valkaryn.net and I will send you the nameserver information.
<<MOD NOTE: Please email him/her directly>>

Hey everyone.
I did call him today regarding some PHP, cp, and dns issues (Wow, alot eh?)
He did say it was $15 per domain/year. Yes, I also think that is crazy...

I have never register nameserver before. I have a doubt. I have a domain www.domain.com
and now I want to use it as name server for myserver. Where do I have to register it. The domain is booked by stargateinc.com
It says check your domain for nameservers at
http://www.nsiregistry.com
Like you said 5 domains are free from zonedit.com. Is it free for one server or 5 domains free for one individual.
Please suggest how do I register this domain as nameserver.
:(
Chicken 09-15-2001, 12:24 PM Jolly, usually you'd register your nameservers at your registrar (in this case stargate). Zoneedit is a different issue, offering DNS control for up to 5 domains free. You would change the nameservers for a domain to *their* nameservers, and then be able to control those 5 domains from there.

Aron,
I have confusion regarding domain. I booked domain 8 months back from stargateinc.
At that time this domain was hosted on diff server so I had diff nameservers.
But now I want to use this domain as nameserver so I asked my ISP for nameservers
ns.domain.com
x.x.x.x
ns2.domain.com
x.x.x.x
but now whenever I try to create host it says
Create domain name server:
Host could not be created.
Host IP address and name must be unique.
And when I try to change the nameserver to the new nameserver
ns.domain.com
ns2.domain.com
it shows error and says check your nameserver at
nsregistry.com
What should I do? I tried to contact stargateinc so many times but they says go to Faq's.
:(
I have several domains with Stargate... Their control panel works great and they are constantly improving services.
With Stargate, every DNS entry gets automatically checked when entered in the control panel. If the IP's of the DN server are not valid, it will display an error. So, it seems that the IP's you are entering are not valid.
That's why they mention the NSRegistry, so that you check if ns.domain.com and ns2.domain.com exist at all...
It seems that both your ISP and your new hosting provider don't have unique IP's for the name servers - they must be.
If it's not a secret, you could post what name server information your host gave you...
Ales
Chicken 09-17-2001, 09:01 AM Agreed, if you post the nameservers and IPs, people could trouble shoot it, but it looks as if you're going to have to ask your provider for two different IPs (probably the easiest way to solve the problem).
Edit: After thinking about it...
Did you request nameservers from your host? In thinking it over, I'm guessing you didn't and were using the dedicated IP the host gave you, but I might be wrong...
