Are there any companies which still offer free SSL certificates?

I noticed that freessl.com no longer has their free certificate available which realistically makes their domain name rather useless now!

I don't mind buying an SSL certificate but hey if there is one for free (and not just 30days) I thought I would give it a go.

Thanks
Todd

Generate your own one: http://www.apache-ssl.org/#Digital_Certificates. ;)

freessl.com was great while it lasted but it had to end sometime - for now, you can’t get much better than $25 from ev1 (rackshack) or as sanjiv said suffer the pop-up warnings and generate your own.

Geotrust has the best certs for the money and RS has the best deal going for geotrust certs. Commodo certs (the ones you can purchase via cpanel) never work properly. They are not accepted by most browsers.

RS has the best deal going for CERTS.

We have been using the RS Geotrust ones for several months now and no complaints. Much cheaper than the old Thawte ones we had.

A further question, has anyone noticed the difference between paying say $25 for a certificate and up to $200 a certificate other then what they guarantee? It all seems to be a bit of a farce to me.

Cheers

Simon, what is a PGP key? I have never heard of it before? That's one thing you'll have to figure out before you can order or generate a SSL certificate :stickout:

Hi Todd,

Some SSL certificates offer seller protection/insurance.

PGP = Pretty Good Privacy, it's been around for many years.

Spend the $25 and grab one from EV1/RS.

As far as the difference between $25 and $200, is the insurance policy that it comes with.

Good luck, thanks!

Comodo claims a 99.3% compatibility rate (same as Verisign and Thawte).

That's correct, and Instant SSL has a very good reseller/affiliate program.

Why is the Instant SSL url banned??

PGP is backdoored by the government, do not trust your e-mail to it.

They also have server problems. Which caused me a major main for a week-end about a month back.

Comodo ( aka Instant SSL ) are well known spammers, I'm taking a stab in the dark, but I'm think it might have something to do with that.

Wouldn't it be great if one of the very clever cookies in here made a free SSL certificate for all of us to use!!!!:D

Now I feel secure. Here's my CC#, date of birth, social insurance number, my first born child (hasn't happened yet :D)....

Honestly, if you are just wanting this to TEST some things, okay...but if you are serious about securing online transactions, shell out the $25 and BUY a cert!
