View Full Version : I HATE Family Reunions
edwin_b 09-22-2003, 03:52 AM <Begin Rant>
Well we had our yearly family reunion today. Or should I say the annual no football and ask every single person ask me about computer problems day.
First off they always do this to me, but don't they understand it's week 3 of the NFL and I wold rather be watching football. Why can't the make it during the summer when the unimportant sporting events are on TV.
Secondly, why is it everyone and I mean EVERYONE in my family feels this is the perfect day to ask me if they have a virus, or what is broke on their computer. The funny thing is it's the same people every year who always have some sort of a virus or computer related issue.
Seriously what part of 'DO NOT OPEN ATTACHMENTS!' do they not understand..?
Is it really that hard of a concept to figure out.
Granted it's nice to see my family and all, but please just do it during the summer and don't ask me any more computer related questions!
</End Rant>
Ok, I just needed to get that off my chest. I feel much better now
hostbox 09-22-2003, 05:05 AM Good for You! :D
VH-Robert 09-22-2003, 06:49 AM I'm not sure if your family is like mine, but they come to me with a computer problem, I tell them how to resolve it.. 2 weeks goes by and they call me and tell me that they took their computer to get fixed by a friend who deleted the entire hard drive. I say "WHA?! All you had to do was install an anti-virus!" and they say "Well you didnt want to help me!" ... they never ASKED for my help.. they just ASKED how to resolve the issue and I told them! Go figure!
Dan L 09-22-2003, 07:22 PM I've successfully gotten out of being called as the 'computer guy' and now live peacefully ruining my hearing with guitar. :D
edwin_b 09-22-2003, 07:41 PM Rob, that sounds like the problem I have some of the time. Luckily a select few are becoming more educated about such things which is great. But gawd some of there are just soo thick headed it amazes me.
Oddly enough the thick headed ones sem to be those who are in their teens and early 20's who are thick headed than the elders. Being 23 myself, I find it odd how people my age (at leat in my family) have no clue that what they are doing is stupid.
I would have no problem helping them if they didn't bombard me at the reunion, and if they would actually listen and learn from what I tell them. I am one of the most willing people to educated those who do not have knowledge about computers and the internet. But when you don't do the things I teach and continue to do the same stupid mistakes year in and year out, it makes me not want to teach them any longer.
Oh well at least my family will keep computer techs employed.
Cirtex 09-22-2003, 07:41 PM Well, I wouldn't mind helping them out if they're close to me and if they live near then just go to their house/apartment and secure up the computer.

But can your amp go up to volume level 11 ? :D
CrazyTech 09-22-2003, 10:39 PM Sounds alot like me, but hey it pays off when they think you're the smartest ever because you know how to delete an email  ;)
Just some key points to giggle over, all bold text is from your post ;)
family reunion
why is it everyone and I mean EVERYONE in my family
The funny thing is it's the same people every year
I just don't find that "funny". Now truly odd would be if everyone and I mean EVERYONE in your FAMILY were different people every year :D
I have the same feeling. Somehoiw, I got out of this years reunion. :)
edwin_b 09-23-2003, 12:23 AM Deb, somtimes I wish they were different people each year as it would make it a bit more fun! :D
I wish I could get out of sadly it always gets held where I live, and on our spread of land out here. Kind of hard saying I'll be busy when it's happening no more than a mile a way from where I live.
However it is nice to know that I am smart enough to delete an email. But it's not saying much considering we are all a bunch of rednecks (myself included). ;)
WorldNet 09-23-2003, 08:35 AM edwin_b....
I feel your pain brother....
Every time I go to a family event somebody gets me all wrapped up into fixing their computer for them.
Best of all.... now that you have done this kind favor, they feel like they now have permission to call me all day long at work and at home during dinner asking more questions, or can I come back and install some software or a new CD burrner.
Relative or not, some people just don't get it!!!

So true.
I find this happening all the time. I have a strict rule about not charging my family for computer work, mainly so it will avoid any issues in the family. If for some reason they break something after I fix it try to blame iton me and then want their money back because they are incompetent.
For the most part however most of my family and freidns for that matter respsect the fact that I don't want to be working on everyone's computer all the time. But there are those few who just don't get it.
Hey Doc, which family do you hate, or are you just referring to the family structure as a whole.? Being a Doctor and all thought I should ask. ;)
