Now we’re not necessarily talking about the broken mirrors and the walking under the ladders of this world but mention them if you like.

One of my favourites is not as personal or in your face, it has a lot to do with a bird, that being the Raven.

I will summarise it quickly, now if you have been to or live in the UK, you will probably know it. It centres around; “The Tower of London”. The building dates back to shortly after the Norman Conquest [post 1066]. The castle has a population of Ravens that reside there, the Superstition dates back to the castles initial years. The superstition states that Ravens have populated the Tower of London since its construction and will remain for as long as the Royal Family is alive and the kingdom is unconquered and free. If the ravens die, are lost or leave the castle, it is a sign that the kingdom shall fall. Today the birds wings have been clipped but it doesn’t stop the superstition. The ironic thing is, that during world war two when England and Britain were on the brink, the raven population fell to only a couple of birds. It began to rise when the allies were on the ascendancy. May the ravens remain for another 1000 years is what I say

Ravens have a lot of superstitions around them, many associated with death, for a page I found, see here >> http://www.intuitivetimes.ca/Articles/december2002/artsupersticdec02.htm

So what are your favourites or don’t you believe in all that poppycock; but I bet you still try not to smash the mirrors, ha

Anyway.. you know what to say but I’d rather we didn’t get bogged down in bible codes and nostra damas and the like but thats me, not the subject.

heheh... heres one my sister believes -

say for instance you light a fire.. well in a closed area (like a room with window closed), the flame shouldnt move, and should jjust stay straight.. and if it starts shaking / moving that means that theres a 'ghost' or spirit walking around thats making the fire active.

science cannot prove that the mind exists... They've opened the brain, they saw the brain, they havent seen the mind.
people believe we have a mind, but science cannot prove that the mind exist. Science cannot prove that people actually thing too. We believe we think, there is no way to prove that our actions are done through a thought process...

Doesn't seem like there are many superstitious people here, even though a UK poll said that 60% still were, on a daily basis. None of you even like a certain one or myth.

Nobody believe, like or know any legends or myths around here then. Fine

Not even slightly suspicious about the incident with Dr Carters' team and Tutnkamun; where has the curiosity gone in the world.

Hi :)

Scientists can't explain electricity either :D They know how to make it, they know what the end result is... but they cannot tell you tell you why.

One superstition I seem to carry is I can't stand shoes being placed on a table. I don't even know why other than it brings bad luck - although I don't seem to have any other superstitions like that.

Something to remember about myths is that all of them have been based on an element of truth / reality. Just that sometimes they have been 'enhanced' a little :D

Oh! I also follow an old saying: 'Never let the sun set on anger'.

When it comes to myths, there have been a fair few documentaries where Noah’s flood has been pinned down to areas of the planet; so just a bit of science and validation of the myth comment.

It was a program, two geologists did, if memory serves.

George Michael and Elton John, right? :D

My favourite one from childhood was making a stupid face and being told by weary parents that: "If the wind changes, you'll stick like that!"

As for superstitions, I always find the pre-game rituals of athletes amusing.

In High School I played Football (U.S. style, of course). I always put my equipment on in the same order. Always.

Hello my_forum_id :)

It was a lateral statement that I made in keeping with the thread starters original post. :D The key word in what I wrote was "why".

Just for the record, no I did not do physics other than at compulsory level at high school, after that I went more along the lines of mathematics and behavioural studies. :)

I always enjoy stories about ancient goods and cultures; the greek, roman, egyptian, native american, viking, and so on. I don't think I have a favorite one that jumps to mind.

When it comes to superstitions... many are to prevent accidents, like walking under a ladder, or placing your shoes on the table. Something might fall on you, and you might scratch the table.

I do have one ritual though... I want to kiss my hubby before I leave him, or it feels funny. I don't think anything will happen, it's just that it isn't complete if I don't.

Hmm myths and superstitions.

I'm not totally convinced things like ghosts/spirits/demons etc don't exist, though not entirely convinced they do either.
