Hello Everyone!
I keep seeing this quote from many dedicated provider: "Unlimited IPs. All IP addresses must be justified and 80% utilized before new IP's are issued".
Exactly how can you justified 80% Utilized IPs. How do they check if IPs are utilized. Would it be possible if I host 200 accounts with 200 IPs on one server.

Sure it would be possible, and I'm not sure if anyone really checks or not (at least with small numbers of IPs).

Hi,
Most data centers that are supplying their dedicateds and colocateds with IPs, will not issue more IPs until you have used at least 85% of the IPs you have already got.
They will give you more,,, just if you have a class C you need to have 215 or 216 in use before they will give you another class C block.
The rule is more to keep them from being horded than anything else. The net is growing fast, and the demand for single IP hosting is up. Some day they will have more IPs with more digits to them, but until they are ready, they are wanting to be able to use what is out there already. Hard to do if hosts are getting 3 class C blocks and only using 80 IPs.
Thats my view on it.

basically they just want to see that the ips are in use... 80% utilization is just a silly number they choose so basically long as you are using all the ips for hosting you'll get more.
the problem is somepeople would get 10-20 ips for their server and only be using 4-5... so the others are being wasted when someone could be using them.
most hosts will just ask to see a list of domains and matching ip addresses as proof. atleast catalog.com does. they give 4 to start and we needed more so they asked for proof. i gave a list of each ip and what domains were on it. few hours latter they gave me another block of 4... no big deal :)

With arin you have to prove 80% utilisation, this is done by mailing them an exact list of IP - Domains, as said this is to so that people don't grab a whole class C and only use 2ips, I'm not sure if they actually check everything out but they probably test a random set of domains.
You should have no problems with ARIN they are a nice company to deal with in my experience, there phone support is good as well :o)

He cannot deal directly with ARIN, he should be calling his upstream Not ARIN. Unless, he is an ARIN member/subscriber.
We've had a lot of trouble with ARIN. Don't think getting IP's is easy.

Anyone can deal with ARIN and buy some IPs. The only catch is getting them routed to, so that the rest of the internet can find them.
But for the most part, yes you should be contacting your datapipe provider or your hosting company. They should already have the necessary contacts to arrange for more and bigger blocks of IPs when necessary.
Just remember... If you ask for them, use them. If you think you're going to need some more, let your host know. It takes time for blocks to become routable.
