Hi,
I'm a newbie to the RAQ, name servers, DNS.. etc...
anyways, I do have a raq that I am renting, where I am learning a whole bunch of knowledge about different computer stuff...

well, i just have a few questions.
1) I have three website with different domain names. RackShack gave me one IP and it says you can use this IP for dozens of websites. Can I use the one IP for all three websites? like when they go to www.thisdomain.com it will virtually direct them to /user/thisdomain/ and when they go to www.thisdomain2.com it will virtually direct them to /user/thisdomain2/, so they don't they are in a virtual domain while they still only see like www.thisdomain.com and www.thisdomain2.com.

2) for the above question, i saw some ppl doing dns work and buying more ips for the above. would it be in my best interest to buy more ips? or can i just do the above with virtual directories and get it all done?

3) what's a good way to secure the directories? i.e. /admin/ someone could just go there and log in..

I'm pretty new to this whole thing, so please speak english to me :-P

thanks for any help you can offer

Joesmoh,

Well, yes to your questions. The Raq allows you to share IP address over several domain names. Just make sure that when you set it up, it points to that IP address. Ever since HTTP 1.1, this virtual pointing is possible and supported by all major web browsers.

Of course, anything older than http 1.1, it would be directed to the first site in which the IP points too. This is pretty rare unless they are using an ancient machine with the first generation web browsers.

Basically, the surfers would not know that the IP is shared unless of course they enter the numeric IP address instead and get some other sites on your list.

For most of what you need to do, a single IP should suffice. Unless you need numeric IPs for some specific reasons such as the need to log in to your site using numeric IPs. I can't think of a reason for it now though.

As for your second question, the /admin page requires a password to log into it and thus should be secured by virtual of that. You might not be prompted with the password dialog screen because your web browser could have 'cached' that page or saved your password profile.

Have fun with your Raq.

If you are going to be running dns from your server, you will need a static ip for that. 2 of them if you are running primary and secondary on the same box.
