Hello all

How do I learn to use a Dedicated Server.
Is there any online tutorial or a book that someone can recommend?

Thanks :)

You can't learn "To Use A Dedicated Server"
You need to learn about administering the operating system etc, for this you'll need to buy a book on the system you're using.

e.g. Windows 2000 Server For Idiots OR Your Guide To RHL 8.0
etc

Before you can even 'learn' to use a dedicated server, do you know why you need one for?

hey, how come there is no "dedicated servers for dummies"?

someone from this forum should contact john wriley publishers and tell them they're missing out on this market :D

Thank you for your reply.

I want to use Linux so I guess I have to learn it but what about Apache? What’s that for, do I need to learn that also?

I have small reseller account but I need streaming audio/video for a non profit organization so a dedicated is needed.

Thanks again.

What you need is a beginner's book on Linux. It should cover all basic topics including Apache.

Check out Linux Apache Web Server Administration by Charles Aulds (ISBN : 0782141374) It covers Linux and Apache Administration. It is a great book for beginners. A great book to keep.

The best would be to have linux installed on an old pc and work from there. It sure is a great way to learn.

No, it isnt difficult at all. Using Secure Shell you can perform all maintenance and administrative tasks, even restart your server and open/close applications and services.

It has an steep initial learning curve, but after a week you'll find it more fun than clicking Start or Ctrl+Alt+Del

The only difficulty you can face in terms of server maintenance is knowing what and how to do it.

Go for a server administration course if you are serious, otherwise get a managed solution.

Having a server on your desk physically will not make a difference.

One advantage about having the server physically next to you is that if you mess up, you can start over. But basically for most things it makes no difference.

SSH into a server remotely would give you the same interface. For web hosting, you would not use the XWindows part of it.

I was thinking of getting a VPS for few weeks to learn it will be cheaper as I don't have an old comptuer to load Linux.

Is VPS a good idea ?

Yes a VPS will do the job fine. :)
