View Full Version : Some advice please

Hi all,

Last monday I got a server from a company I would rather not say (no, not pwebtech ;)) and RedHat 7.1 was installed when I selected RH6.2.

Not a big problem, but cpanel/whm was not working - PHP wouldn't install with it.

After a long talk with DarkOrb and Kunal who does tech support for a very reputable webhost, it was established that RedHat 7.1 has a dodgy kernal, so I told the company I got the server from about it, and he said he would wipe it and put RH6.2 on it as originally requested.

16th August he emailed me saying that the network controller wasn't compatible with RH6.2(?) and that I would get a new server with RH7.1 on it.

Since then I have heard nothing from the host - and I have been emailing him everyday for a progress update, even ICQing him.
Today I tried calling the support from the UK to the US and got Plusweb's answerphone!

I have had a terrible past with webhosts + dedicated servers in the past so this doesn't do my confidence any good.

What do you suggest I do now?
Wait longer?
Do a chargeback?

To me, a chargeback is the LAST thing I want, but the time I am without the server is wasted money considering I have paid for it.
To top it off this host wants $175/r for support!
I even approached another webhost to support this server for $100 less!

So, any advice? Am I being unreasonable?

Thanks

James

If they don't respond to phone, icq, e-mai for long times and require money for support then there is nothing much to do besides moving on to a new provider.

Thanks for the reply.

I am a very patient guy and too nice to people, but last week when I had the problems, nothing was happening - emails were barely answered so I actually done something out of character and threatened a chargeback.

Within minutes, I got an email back saying that if I done it, I would be reported to his credit collectors as well as reported to the credit agencies for failure to pay for the item.

Can he do that? I mean, the idea behind chargeback, was incase you were unhappy with a product/service and you return it to them but they refused to refund you, so you can chargeback.

Or am I thinking incorrectly?

If you want to issue a chargeback, I belive the main way to do so is to claim breach of contract. Im sure there are plenty of otherways. But if he did not hold up some part of the contract, I think you can issue one. Also, if they respond in 2 min to a chargeback and not to other support questions, as before, change hosts.

If they do that you can also go against them.

You are paying for the service, if the service is not there then you don't pay.

If he reports you to any of those places they can't just put you on bad record listing or anything like that.
It is in investigation.
You can always fight it back.
Don't let them control you.

Thanks again

I think I am too patient and nice and should be more forceful :/

Will give him until Wednesday to get back to me before emailing him requesting a full refund which if after 2 days he still has not replied, I will chargeback.

Thanks :)

yeah, people take advantage of that :/

I just wish webhosts were more open with their clients and would give up to date progress reports when asked :/
