Hi,

Here's my first colocation experience. I chose tera-byte.com because of their good reputation on the board and because they are located in Canada like I am, even if they are 2500 miles away from me.

I shipped the server last week and after 3 days I still didn't have any news from them, even if I knew they received the server in less than 48 hours (I had a tracking number). So I had to email them asking what was going on.

They replied me that they had received the server the day before but could not get it online. Seems like they were waiting for me to ask what was going on before telling me. The server is running freeBSD, I thought it would be easy to configure it. Simply plug it, and configure the interface with the right ip address in rc.conf and thats it. I guess they are right about it and that something is wrong with the server.. They asked me if they could re-install the OS. This was last friday.

I replied Friday night, saying I didn't expect this and they could re-install it if they really need to (I have a backup HD in the box and each drives has the same content so I would not loose anything, as long as they don't screw everything up while re-installing.

I still have no news from them, even if I asked them to keep me updated and I sent them a message this morning (a couple hours ago). I just want to know what is going on. I would not be mad at all if they would tell me we're really busy we'll look into it later this week, I can wait, but I want to know. Am I asking to much?

And what do you guys think about this "the server would not accept the network settings we need to have it set for" problem?

Thank you,

Cedric

I dunno Cedric. This sounds like one of those things that only you and them will be able to solve. I'm not sure how much help the forum can be to this situation. I realize you more just want to vent than anything else and I hope it works out for you.

My experience with them has been good and they've never bs'd me at least, so I'd wait a bit for a reply and/or call them (if possible). Good luck...

Hi,

Well one thing for sure they don't answer their emails often. That doesn't mean they're bad because my server would have been up less than 24 hours after they'd receive it if there would not have been this unexpected problem. But it's not really nice from them to ignore my emails and not updating me.

The new $2.50/GB plan/no setup/no other charge is probably getting them a lot of orders, which explains the situation. I did expect it, but the deal is so great that I can wait a little more than usual without problem. Let's just hope they'll get back to me soon..!

That's all there is to say. I'll keep you updated.

Thank you,

Cedric

I spoke with the person on shift at the NOC desk and they said that your server is being worked on as we speak. Apparently there was some sort of firewall preconfigured on the box that wouldn't allow the network settings to be specified (it was stuck on DHCP) and that's why there were problems getting the box online. From what I was told, they're finishing up the installation of the OS and software now and your server should be online shortly.

Hi,

Yup, my server was online at the time you posted your message I think. They had to re-install everything because some firewall settings prevented them from disabling DHCP. Let me tell you this is very strange, and I would have been really mad if I had no backup of my system (I spent months customizing it).

So if you have important data in your server, take my experience as an exemple and be sure to have backups. In my case I had 2 identical hard disks in the server, they cleaned the first, I still have the second.

And about tera-byte, I guess they simply don't email people when there is nothing to say. Now that I know it I'll try to be a little more patient :)

Thank you,
