View Full Version : Can-Host appears to be down...
fracture 08-20-2001, 08:54 AM Hey all,
According to my internetseer account and my own failed attempts to connect, Can-Host is down for the moment. I'll post again when it's back up.
- Chris
PS - Felix, could you post a report when things are back up? Thanks.
You sure? I have no problems getting to Can-Host at all.........
However, your site is throwing up a PostgreSQL error (server hasn't started), so it may only have been a temporary Apache reboot.....
fracture 08-20-2001, 09:25 AM Hmm. I don't know. I'm still trying it, at 9:15 EST, and not getting through to my site, or to www.can-host.com, or hydrogen.can-host.com. There could be something weird with the way I'm getting routed, but I'm on a pretty big corporate wan, so I'd be surprised if anything changed without notice. Plus, I'm getting through to everything else I try.
I always try to title these posts " blah blah blah *appears* to be down ... " since YMMV. Hopefully it is just a reboot.
By the way, great sig. ;)

I can't get to http://can-host.com either. But I can get to canhost.com. (maybe that's what someone else may have tried;) )

I trust you weren't referring to me! :stickout
In all seriousness : no, I did use the hyphen, since I know Felix's site and have tried his web://cp out on many occasions.
It could be a routing issue somewhere...

Would someone else try please??
I trust BC (*naming names this time*) :erm: But another opinion doesn't hurt anything.
Félix C.Courtemanche 08-21-2001, 12:18 AM Hello Everybody,
I'm sorry I have not been much around lately...
Anyway, what you all saw was the result of our attempt to block a DoS attack that targetted the server hosting www.can-host.com and the cp in construction. In order to keep system stability and maintain decent traffic to our sites, we blockled only the subnets of the incoming flood.
The huge problem was that a majority of these attacks were coming from aol, that was blocked as well.
<edit>
According to our statistics, the attack was sustained for 2 days. The server could handle the load without any problem, but the flood blocked incoming visitors to see any web pages. This is a known flaw of the TCP/IP protocole and something we have to deal with :I At no time the server could have been compromised or crashed.
</edit>
As of now, the DoS stopped 4 hours ago and seems to be down. I have finished a script to scan and deny only specific thousands attacking ips, we are also considering a Cisco firewall to prevent this from happening again.
admin@can-host.com if you have any question :)
... Yeah, I am still alive, as is web.cp :D
fracture 08-21-2001, 08:20 AM Thank you, Felix.
I posted to this board just to let people know, in case they weren't yet aware of the outage.
But let me publicly say that Felix has always been very good about replying, with specific details about what's going on. I like that transparency; it's one of the main reasons I host with Can-Host.
On a related note, this is another occasion where I wish webhostingtalk had a "Outages/Announcements" forum, which was used only to alert customers in the case of outages like this one. Then, someone like Felix could send one message to one place, and we'd all know where to check if we think we're having problems.
Whaddaya say, admins? ;)
