Hey folks,
For those looking to resell... how important is it that you get dedicated IPs? Some reseller hosts provode none, some provide 1, and some hosts provide several... etc.
Thanks in advance.

Depends how branded you want things to be.
A couple of IP's can make your nameservers and IP based site appear more independant than having hostnames resolve to an unbranded setup.

I think it very very important to get as many as you can.
Some reasons:
Host your shared ip sites on YOUR ip. This also helps the provider when some joker gets an IP blocked. (Another resellers client lets say) This keeps you clean. This also makes the reseller a little more proactive with watching the shop.
Having them ready and available when your clients ask you for one or two.
Setting up a cert on the fly.
Just a few reasons.

Thanks for the quick reply Matt. Is there any other benefit to having dedicated IPs... or more than the 3 that make you more independent in appearence?
Also... if I were to get a reseller account and one of my clients wanted a dedicated IP address and I only had the 3... am I correct that usually you can purchase another dedicated IP from the host above me so I can in turn provide it to my client?
Thanks again.

Your host should allow you to purchase additional IP's if you need them, yes. Also the two IP's being used for nameservers could be used to host IP based sites.

Two should be plenty to get started really. As Matt points out, you can use these to host domains and for nameservers as well. A good provider can allocate IP's quickly. Be sure to ask how long it normally takes and what the procedure is. Most resellers don't use more than a few.

I would say get as many as you can :D
Also check how much additional IPs are as some providers charge high setup fees for them, also check to see if there is a restriction on the number you can get.
A good proportion of our customers use extra IPs for secure certs.

I didn't even think abou that.
Let's say I have many customers who want their own SSL. Will the customers who want their own SSL need a dedicated IP or can the normal shared IPs work?
Thanks again... great input!

For an SSL cert you need a dedicated IP for the domain.

Just to clarify...yes each site needing to use SSL needs a dedicated IP. Now you can use a shared IP, as long as the SSL site is the primary site (the site that loads when you type the IP in the browser).

Another reason I heard for having a dedicated IP is that if a site gets blacklisted by say, Google, and it's a shared IP, all the other sites sharing that IP get blacked by Google.
Can anyone confirm this?
