View Full Version : Web development tools for iMac
brookie 08-19-2001, 03:10 PM I am helping a friend to find some webhosting and build a site.
However, he is a Mac user and I am not familiar with the software available for web page/site development.
What are the FrontPage/DreamWeaver equivalents on Macintosh?
What free/cheap/shareware tools would people recommend?
Dogma 08-19-2001, 06:04 PM There are Mac versions of Macromedia Dreamweaver and Adobe GoLive. I consider these to be the best 2 tools available...I'm not sure, but their may be a Mac Frontpage included w/ Office 2001 for Macs.
ckizer 08-21-2001, 07:36 AM Dreamweaver & Fireworks along with all the Adobe products started out being Mac only. Even though I'm using a PC right now, I still prefer the mac version of the software, they have less errors and are more polished.
Not to meantion the OS is just loaded with features for Design, heh it just feels more efficent.
ckizer 08-21-2001, 07:41 AM On a side note they should be Native for OS X shortly :-)
brookie 08-21-2001, 09:00 AM Thanks, so far.
Dreamweaver and GoLive are rather feature-rich and expensive for my friend.
Are there any free/shareware tools he could start with?
Where is a good place to look for Mac shareware?

You did ask for the Dreamweaver equivalent for the Mac...
Microsoft will likely never port Frontpage 2000 - thank goodness.
If all you want is a clean HTML editing tool, BBEdit is probably one of the best.
For Mac shareware, try macorchard.com.

Try Claris HomePage -- its easy to use.

Any idea where to get it?
The home page seems to redirect to filemaker and not mention Claris.
Studio-51 08-21-2001, 01:21 PM Wasn't Claris Works / Claris renamed AppleWorks etc?

Sounds familiar - but I've just checked the Apple web site and AppleWorks does NOT include website tools.
The search goes on...
thewitt 08-21-2001, 09:02 PM Claris Homepage has been discontinued.
Did you try using a search engine?
Here's the page that came up #3 when I searched on Google:
http://desktoppublishing.com/maceditors.html
mitocondrias 08-22-2001, 01:38 AM I looked in macdownload (the version for macs of the zdnet downloads)...
here is a link to the page for web authoring. Thereīs some shareware, free and demos...
http://hotfiles.zdnet.com/cgi-bin/texis/swlib/hotfiles/search.html?b=mac_subcat&link=1&Usubcategory=Web+Authoring&Usrt=date
thereīs a lot of diferent tools for diferent uses... i donīt know exactly what your friend want to do, but this place may be good...
Maybe he can look and search for things that he want to try...
Hope this helps...

There are 4 copies of Adobe Pagemill 3.0 on ebay and all are going for nickles, Pagemill is pretty basic but there is still support for it at Adobe. I have not looked for Golive 4.0 or 5.0 over at ebay I'm sure there are a few copies floating around for sale there. I like Adobe over Macromedia only because I am used to working with it. If your friend wants to steer clear of WYSIWYG page editors, BBedit (http://www.bbedit.com) might interest them.
macvillage 08-23-2001, 11:29 AM Claris Home Page was discontinued, but is available most of the time from macwarehouse, and many online stores. I still use it for MacVillage.net since I do most coding with BBEdit, I just use it for tables and stuff that I don't feel like doing by hand. It's cheap and very effective. It is one of those apps, that if Apple kept developing it (since Apple bought Claris) they would create something really good that would challenge GoLive.
