Hi there,
I've got a dedicated box at the Planet but it's not set up the way I want so I'm thinking of asking them to let me do a remote FTP install. Only problem is it looks like you have to be on the console to do it.
Anybody have any info they can share on this?
Thanks,
Iggy

Can you define remote FTP install? i.e you want to install a ftp server remotely? or? What OS are you on?
Nope. Got a dedicated box I want to use but the partitioning isn't to my liking and there's some libs and whatnot I'd like so I thought I'd just rip it down and reinstall RedHat 9 the way I want it.
Course it's in another state so I thought maybe I could figure out how to install from scratch from a remote location. Hunting around it doesn't appear to be easy without standing in front of the machine.

perhaps you could check whether they have any KVM over IP devices :)
Use SSH? I don't mean to be disrepectful but is that a serious answer? And if so why'd you bother to post it?
I think the answer is just to build out my own box and colo it but the deal was so sweet I couldn't resist.
Thanks for the replies,
Iggy
OK. This one's old but since I just ran across it maybe this will help someone else out.
Here's some software that'll do what I was thinking about. Still beta but a good idea.

can you take the kickstart file out of the root dir (assuming its still there), edit that to your liking then ask the datacenter to use that and install a fresh copy for you?
I was looking for a way to redo the machine from scratch entirely remotely without having to bring any of the tech folks into it.
The little prog above seems to provide a way of booting an entire image into memory, making ssh available and letting you do the install from there.
Of course I haven't tried it but it's the kind of solution I was looking to hear about when I posted the question initially. Pretty damn nifty assuming it works.
I'll post results when I get a chance to mess with it.
