What are the factors that could lead to site down:sleeping: ?

My first cancers start from the registrar firms:dgrin:, is it possible that the domain registrar side could be the reason for the site to be down, i.e. the server of the registrar down. And is it better off to register with NIC or well-known registrar. What about Dotster are they good.

The information you submit at your registrar is cached on servers all over the world. If your site was down, this would be just about the *least likely* reason in my opinion.

There are too many of them to list but here are couple:

Apache down
BIND down
CPU overload
Earthquakes
The NOC got hit by a asteroid
Internal abuse
World Destruction

Really there are tons of reasons, ranging from likely to not so likely. On the server. The httpd software could be down, the dns server could be down. The power to the server could be out. The hard drive could fail. Then there is the network connection. I mean so many. From my own point of view, I would say mostly due to software.

I agree, most downtimes are caused because of software -or- human errors.

Thanks,

Peter

Well you know, with that many servers so close to each other, they just get all hot and... oh wait, not that... :erm:

Usually quietly with your website just disappearing off the face of the planet.

Except when you're a hosting company, and the website is the only thing that goes quiet. The phone usually starts ringing off the hook.

I heard of an asteroid coming into a building, through the roof, and right through a full rack of 42 1u servers.

Tack on 'System Administrators that don't know what they're doing' to the list.

No no, remember the magic word/registar, NetworkSolutions....

Alien invasions usually knock out web sites, too...Something about the weaponry they use.

All kidding aside, routing problems are a fairly common cause of a site's being 'down'. These can be accidental, or intentional.

Just before their company went down in flames, a sizeable area ISP upgraded their routing tables and blocked all traffic from their network to ours-so that from the perspective of their customers, all sites on our servers were 'down'.

It took us a whole day of dealing with them (and with a number of our angry hosting customers) to get the issue resolved, and get an admission that they'd blocked the traffic, and to get them to apologize for the fact that their support engineers had told people to call us as we were having the problem not them.

Connectivity problems can also cause a site to be 'down'. Some months ago Verizon had an outage in their fiber network and took down all the T's, DS's, and OC's in the area that were on their fiber-the only thing that saved our bacon was that we had a single T still on copper, and it was a very low-traffic period.

And let us not forget those packet-sniffing script kiddies that hack in and 0wn j00r b0x0r, they'll take down sites if they are of a mind to, replacing them with their own, or simply deleting them altogether.

If the server administrator doesn't do a root compromise recovery (and a number of them don't even reliaze they've been owned until someone informs them that DOS attacks are being launched from their server) you can't get rid of them.

Hackers are like dandelions. You can cut them with the lawnmower, yank them out, but unless you get to the root of the problem, they will pop right back up again.

In this order:

1) DNS Software (On your connection/dialup)
2) Web Server software
3) DNS Software (On the host)
4) Router down somewhere between you and the host.
5) A firewall causing trouble.
6) Loss of power
7) ...and the unmentionables (fire at the host, the gas company cutting through one of your fibres, an upstream host/router 'accidently' cutting you off etc).
