Hello,

My friend is hosting an ikonboard and having serious problems with it.

She's trying to find a place to move it to. She was first on a free host and is now on a paid host. The free host had one problem and now this host is having another and she's not getting a whole lot of help from them.

Does anyone know of a host that will allow ikonboards and is RELIABLE?

I think she'd prefer a free host, but any suggestions will do as I am willing to help her with costs!!

Thank you!!

Is the size of her board big?

If you are willing to pay, try hosting4less.com, a large UBB there without any problem

Hello Ryka,
It's nice of you to want to help out your friend.
Most hosts who support PHP and MySQL can run ikonboard. It maybe due to the size of your database that your friend ishaving problems, or it maybe due to popularity of the board...

One thing to keep in mind, when most hosts advertise a 100MB for example, this is for static html files. Databases are kept in a
seperate directory (normally even on a seperate file system) and
is not included in your quota.

Before you pay and move to a new host, I would suggest you first contact sales and explain your situation and see if you will need special arrangements.

if you don't have a really big ikonboard you should have no problem finding a free host

Why don't choose another board ?

Ikonboard uses a lot of CPU ressource and free hosting companies don't like it ...

So try xmb (www.xmbforum.com) the fastest BB on the earth (based on PHP and mySQL) ! I daily use it on my site and it's perfect. Moving users from ikon to xmb shouldn't be a problem too.

I have an iB on an account from http://wizardshosting.com and one from http://vortechhosting.com. Works fine on both of them.

What version are you wanting to use? iB2.* or iB3 beta?

iB is not as much of a respource hog as UBB, It has far many more features. The iB 3 with MySQL support is blazing fast.

anyhow, to the subject,
I am hosted with www.web-spring.net and they installed my iB 3 for free, you might want to check them out.

Hello Austin,

I'm perplex about your comment...

From ikonboard web site :

Ikonboard Progress Update
Posted on Wednesday, August 15, 2001 at 14:17 by Charles Warner

Tentative Release Dates Set

The fifth beta of Ikonboard version 3.0 is set to be released on Thursday, August 23. This beta will add support for skins, add support for several missing features, and fix reported bugs.

The final beta of Ikonboard version 3.0 is scheduled to be release on Thursday, August 30. This beta will add support for mySQL and fix any bugs reported since the last beta release.

The first release candidate for Ikonboard version 3.0 is scheduled to be released on Thursday, September sixth. Depending on bugs reports and user feedback, this version may be certified as the final release of version 3.0 or will be followed by release candidate two.

So, I wanna know how are you running a iB with mySQL support, if it's still not released ????

And sorry, ACTUALLY IB is ugly slow compared to xmb ! just try to install XMB (it takes 1 minute, no 1 sec more) and you'll see by yourself that I'm telling the true...

kind regards,
Georges

Well I guess you do not visit the iB forums regularly, They gave the link to the MySQL test forum, thats how i know :), Thanks for your concern though.

"ACTUALLY IB is ugly slow compared to xmb !"

Yes it is without using MySQL,(not that much)
But please try to use the iB3 with MySQL and you will be blown away at the speed.

Austion,

Thx for these infos !

I'm not a big fan of IB because I only tried the 2 release and I received a mix feeling about it (speed and numerous bugs). But release 3 seems very promising :)
The only "issue" is that I not use alpha/beta on my production sites. Anyway, I will give it a try on my dev box

And on our side, give a shot to XMB, it's pretty cool too !

Cheers,
Georges

I suggest changing over to VB the server will thank your friend. If the discussion board is not big then you may host it on Futurequest.net or any other host that offers fast and powerful servers

Thank you to everyone who provided suggestions and advice.

I e-mailed her all the suggestions and offers I received and we both checked them out plus some research on other companies suggested by friends.

She chose a host today and signed up. Here's hoping it works out!

Thanks again!
