Lah_Lah 08-17-2001, 11:47 PM Hi everyone,
Need some help.
I want to run redhat linux 6.2 + coldfusion express + mysql
anyone got any experiens or not?? suggestion? cost?
because both are free, only need to get merant ODBC
May be I am wrong, please correct me, thanks
gordita 08-18-2001, 01:00 PM I've never heard of anyone doing hosting with coldfusion express. I thought it was only for developer use or something. I could be wrong but you might want to check into that a little further. My company works with CF on linux quite a bit, but only with CF 4 and 5 pro.
Lah_Lah 08-18-2001, 10:48 PM thanks for your reply
Ok, then we use CF 5 pro,
now is the database question?
1. what is the database I can use with CF 5 Pro?
2. if using Mysql, need any other connection software or not?
3. stablilities?
4. performances?
please some one help me.
gordita 08-18-2001, 11:31 PM You won't need any extra software to connect to MySQL. I havn't had any major issues with CF 5 on Linux. Check out the cf-linux mailling list for more info http://www.mail-archive.com/cf-linux%40houseoffusion.com/
We've developed apps using CF 4.5 on Redhat 6.2 and 7.0. A key issue is memory usage. We had some apps that were used for surveys -- these surveys where extensive (about 60 questions each, multiple options/question.) After bumping the RAM to 256MB (this was before the RAM prices plummeted), the server worked great. We even used a legacy SQL database on a WinNT box before we converted everything to MySQL.
Costwise, MySQL and CF is much better than MS SQL and CF. If you run on windows, you will need a license for Win2K server, SQL Server, and CF. Plus, I find the memory and hardware requirements are greater. We switched an older PII350/256MB ram box over from MS based (SQL,Win2K,CF) to a redhat system using MySQL, CF. We got better reliability and performance using the same hardware and basically the same apps.
We are now evaluating Zope -- the Zope platform looks compelling but the learning curve is kind of tough, especially if you do not have a python background.
Lah_Lah 08-19-2001, 09:48 PM Thanks huck,
Please keep update if you got any issue of CF + Linux + Mysql.
Can we use CF express for hosting, any feature limited?
Are you using pro or ent? What is your suggestion?
Thanks
Dunthank 08-24-2001, 08:16 AM Hi,
We're actually using ColdFusion Express for Linux with MySql in a Production environment. There are a lot of tags not available with Express... for a list, see
http://integrahosting.integrahosting.com/CFDOCS/CFExpress_Language_Reference/2_ColdFusion_Tags/lr2_002.htm
As long as those tags are not used, we've had no problems.
Number one issue with CFExpress:
NO CFMAIL tag!
Last I checked, you cannot send email with CFExpress. I find this to be the most limiting factor of this version of CF versus the full version. Many apps I develop we need to send an email -- you would have to pass this off to another script if you use CFExpress.
Now, if your app does not need to send email then this would not be a problem.
If you are planning on reselling Coldfusion hosting, most people would expect that you are running at least Pro -- they would be quite irate if they install their app and have it fail because you are running Express.
Pro should be sufficient. I believe the Ent version has a few more tags but is mainly is geared for performance, especially now that is runs under Solaris on Sparcs.
For a comparison of Pro and Ent:

Dunthank 08-24-2001, 08:56 AM Exactly.
We offer the CF Express and we make sure it is labeled as such. We encourage the use of PHP.
Lah_Lah 08-24-2001, 08:23 PM Thanks, we looking more with the CFM and MySQL
I think I will got for PRO.
How much is the PRO version in US??
Can I use MySQL for Destop database/Application Database??
Using VB to access/connect MySQL??
Because we want to develop a database that can access by web and destop at the same time.
Thanks for reply
