Hello,

I have a couple of users that have very cpu-intensive scripts running. I found one today that caused my cpu load to go up to 3.2 on a single cpu system!!! I did a top command and found this script using 98.3% of cpu. This is a ridiculous load because the system averages around .07 cpu load when his script is not running.

What is an acceptable cpu usage for a single user in a shared environment? Obviously the one above is not acceptable... I am just trying to figure out what an acceptable cpu usage policy will be before I add a bunch of users to the system.

Thanks for your thoughts!

If a server hold 300 users I would say each user should use 0.003
Some of them use even less.
The more users you have the the number lowers, unless you have a monster machine.

mpope,

In addition to what Palm just said, I'd like to raise the point that your server resources should also be adequate to cope with sudden (unexpected) usage spikes. That could be due to the result of something positive like successful advertising campaigns to negative such as spam.
