I have an ASP website that has been at Interland for 3 years. They have decided that virtual servers will not be able to have custom .dll installed. So I am forced to leave. I could stay as a client but I feel the company needs to get dedicated.
So I went looking and I found what appears to be a unique offer and I wonder whether it is too good to be true.
Although not posted on their site I’m being offered the opportunity to purchase 2 servers @ PIII 800mhz
512 mg ram each, dual 30 gig ide drives in each, backup tape drive, 0.40 Mbps Pipe to the Internet (100 MBPS Burstable)
one server would be run SQL 7.0 database, the other would be ColdFusion and Advanced 2000.
10 IP address
The servers carry a price tag of $1500, no additional set-up fees, the bandwidth is $295 per month.
Is this a good deal?
What should I look out for?
What would be some other alternatives that I should consider?
The people in this forum seem to know what they are talking about. I'd appreciate frankness.

Rackshack.net, if you've been doing ok on virtual hosting so far, as long as Chillisoft ASP is ok for ya.

There's a couple of things you should consider about this offer..
First of all are you sure you need 2 servers? If your site was doing great on shared hosting jumping directly to 2 dedicated server may be too much.
1500$ is a "fair" price but I don't think its an incredible price.. unless it includes the NT licence :)
How do they measure bandwidth? This is a very important thing because depending on the way they do it and the kind of traffic you get, you can pay more than you think. They probably do it at the 95 or 90 percentile, which means they take you average throughput less the 5 or 10 percent peak to determine if you used .40 mbps or more.
I personnaly would not feel confortable with this kind of bandwidth plan. I prefer to pay by the actual number of GB transfered.
Make sure the host has a very good support (24/7 and fast), especially because you're under windows. I would be scared to colocate a NT server because they are just not made for remote administration.
That's my 2 cents..

Brewster,
as smash has already stated, moving from a virtual server to two dedicated servers seems like a waste of ressources. if you have done good one a virtual server, there shouldn't be the need of a dedicated one (except your need to install your own .dll's).
The offer seems incredibally good if all licenses are included (maybe even too good, since the licenses are far more expensive) and the connection isn't just to the data centers lan but to the backbone, at least the data centers connection should be the same size as the lan, otherwise, it doesn't make sense. $1500 for the servers w/out any licence is okay, but it's not outstanding.

Thanks unabomber and smash-
As I understand it SQL likes being on its own. I was told it was more stable. I make extensive use of a very intricate database so I thought I would put it by itself on 1 server.
All the ColdFusion, custom scripts, and all the domains that will I have would sit on server 2.
I've been told the licenses are included
Aside from pinging their site how can I tell how a host is connected to multiple backbones?
How do I knowif they are really a BGP4?
Thanks again
:D
