I have been trying to list our site http://www.findsp.com for a long time in dmoz.org - the web hosting directories category:

http://dmoz.org/Computers/Internet/Web_Design_and_Development/Hosting/Directories/

For some reason we can't get oursleves listed there.

Any advice?

Have you emailed the category editor asking why?

Again, and again and again.

There could be many reasons to be denied but to be ignored is an unacceptable response from such an organisation. Point this out and ask why it appears that they let in any old porn site etc.

If they all get ignored for no good reason go higher and ask why youre being ignored. Fight hard to get into dmoz, as I'm sure youre aware its worth it for SE coverage.

Lonny,

You might check my response in thread http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=36831&highlight=dmoz

It could be that nothing is wrong with your submission. The category editor may simply be lazy and is not looking at new submissions. There are categories which have unacceptably high numbers of unreviewed sites. I would suggest that you apply to become the editor of the category, whether there is an existing editor or not. In your application, indicate that you have considerable knowledge related to the category which you wish to edit. If there are, in fact, a large number of unreviewed sites due to an AWOL editor, a higher level editor may be quite glad to approve your application just to have someone take care of the category.

Now I must admit that in some of the categories which I edit in the religion area, I'm pretty picky. The site has to relate. It has to be of decent quality. The web author has to know what they're talking about. In the religion area, you get a lot of submissions from ill-informed people who want to shout from their soapbox, with nothing interesting to say. I turn down these sites right and left. But in the computer area, if you know that your submission fits, and is of decent quality, I wouldn't be passive. I would apply to be the category editor and then add my own site myself. But once you are accepted, just make sure that you are fair with any submissions by competitors.

Good advice, but the only thing tougher than getting a site into dmoz is getting in as an editor, from all the reports I've heard. I've never applied, because I don't have the time and would soon tons of unreviewed sites backed up. Yeah, I know, that probably makes me very well qualified! :dgrin:

It's too bad, what's happening at dmoz. It was a great concept, and seemed to be headed in the right direction. These days, though, many categories are becoming irrelevant, lacking new sites and containing dead links to no-longer-existant sites -- or to sites that aren't what they were when they were submitted and reviewed. It's leading to a decline in the directory's value, and correspondingly in the number of partner sites carrying dmoz results.

You may be able to get some relief at www.searchengineforums.com. Their ODP Forum rules contain specific guidelines to follow if you're having trouble getting your site listed. Be sure to adhere to their time schedule and keep records of all your correspondence and submission dates. A couple of senior ODP editors moderate this forum, and they are very helpful.
