View Full Version : Servint VPS short review
parkinghost 09-11-2003, 12:55 AM I just bought Servint VPS plan few days ago because I have heard a lot about them. Here is my short reviews
Network: 7/10
continune to have problems in Asia. Ticket issued and I was told it is resolved, actually it is not,. many many HOURS passed. no solution. I will post tracert route.
support: 5/10
Front-line tech supports are fast as many people said.
However, Yesterday I emailed NOC about a Cpanel "list accounts " problems. Surprisingly NOC tech asked me to issue a ticket to cpanel. This is really confusing? do they offer fully managed VPS then? ( BTW ,I found solution on RS forums )
I also emailed their NOC tech to ask
"why ASP and KISS firewall are not working on VPS?"
"What firewall is working on VPS?"
"FTP errores"
I was told that NOC staff forwarded that email to "engineer"..10 hours passed, no reply. I have never got replies from they so -called "engineers"
I am not really complaining here but giving many people a rough view about their VPS. I bought 49USD/month VPS that give me 2G/100G BW. It seems to be a better choice to buy Dathorn's plan
, which is FULLY MANAGED at similar price:eek:
parkinghost 09-11-2003, 12:56 AM I change my country 's isp name to "hideisp" because I do not want to show it here though.

eddy2099 09-11-2003, 01:22 AM So far I have been impressed with their service. There are areas in which they can improved but as it is I am not complaining.
I am from Asia too but do not have any issues with any access. But I remember some time last week they were working on the network and thus an issue with the bandwidth.
I am not sure about the cpanel issue which you asked. If it is a real bug in Cpanel itself then Cpanel tech support should be the one who handles it. Servint does not own Cpanel and do not have the necessary permission to modify the source codes. I guess if you know what you are doing you could do so yourself but that may be at the expense of voiding your warranty. I am not sure. LikeI say, I do not know the question being asked. If it is a question on how to use so and so feature then I believe tech can help.
I have not asked too many questions since so far things work out of the box. Had a Cpanel system before so there is really no difference for me.
The VPS is not a true dedicated server and thus the kernel is patched differently. From what I understand from their forums, the kernel is actually one single kernel and they are done at server level and not at VPS level. Adding certain things such as Firewall and APF might break certain components. I believe tech would not install something which is not fully certified and tested to work on their system. Give them sometime.
I've only been with them for about 3 days and I am pleased with what I am getting.
parkinghost 09-11-2003, 01:26 AM Regarding Cpanel question I asked, simply speaking, I found a solution on rackshack 's forum and resovle it by simply "restarting" server.
You see what I meant here? :D
so far I am running server without firewall..
eddy2099 09-11-2003, 01:33 AM Well, without knowing what the question is, I have some trouble visualizing it but nevertheless you got your response. I guess tech may not have been able to duplicate the error. Not sure. Can't say.
parkinghost 09-11-2003, 05:33 AM forgot to say that
1.Quotas is NOT working properly on VPS, this make you very difficult to resell
2. firewall is not installed by default, which is fine, but KISS and APF is not working on VPS either.
I was told APF is working but no one helped to go through complicated procedures. It makes it look like a Unmanaged server.
3. network problems continune
sprintserve 09-11-2003, 06:29 AM Quotas support has to do with the kernel. Since this is VPS, the kernel is not quite the same. As such that has to be resolved by Virtuozzo. (Last I heard it was fixed by them already. But just hearsay)
Are you saying there's no iptables support? If you need it installed on your behalf, as far as I know, only the engineers are supposed to do any installations. They have different level of engineers I guess.
I can't see what's complicated about APF installation.
As for the so-called network problems, which country are you trying from? I am in Asia and has no problems.
Mark_TVI 09-11-2003, 08:30 AM I'm no tracert expert but if you are hitting 250ms on the last hop out of your ISP and before you even hit ServInt's network, how can you expect your speeds to ever get faster than that?
wubwob 09-11-2003, 09:11 AM Without his ISP in the picture theres a 60ms delay, with his ISP is 310ms! Looks like its his ISP lol.
Oh btw - i have a servint VPS - and i think its great.
Support is top notch.
parkinghost 09-11-2003, 09:38 AM anyone has Cpanel "list account" problems?
"list account" on WHM does not show all your accounts?
Servint has no ideas how to resolve this problem, which I have never seen at httpme, clook and others providers. Their basic supports are fast but supports to Cpanel is just nearly 1/10.
Also, NEVER got replies from their "Engineers". Everytime my questions were forwarded to "engineers", no replies in past 48 HOURS.
parkinghost 09-11-2003, 09:39 AM regarding netwrok , hop 21, what is wrong with it ?
eddy2099 09-11-2003, 09:46 AM This 'list account' you mentioned about ? Were the accounts imported there or they were just created directly on the machine ? If they were imported, how did you import them ? And was it Cpanel to Cpanel import or some other system to Cpanel import ?
Are you using a proxy with your ISP ? I am not sure if this was related but in the past with my former ISP when I make upates to my web page, I cannot see the changes immediately even if it was changed. I believe the page was cached in the proxy and I had to wait 24 hours for it to be refreshed.

3. network problems continune Regarding APF, RTFM. Setting "MONOKERN=1" and IF="venet0" in the conf.apf file will make it work. It still spits out some warning messages but from what I can see it works just fine. Test it, try it, YMMV.
Look at /proc/user_beancounters, what do you see for numiptent? That's the host configurable parameter that defines how many iptables entries you can have.
Regarding quotas, look at /etc/mtab, do you see a line that looks like "/dev/vzfs / reiserfs rw,usrquota, grpquota 0 0" ?? If not, ask them to enable disk quotas for you and you should be good to go. Note, this does require that the VDS is stopped, changes applied, then restarted.

I don't seem to be having a problem with that hop on any other traceroutes I'm doing. However, when I do traceroutes to your ISP, I get consistently 5%-10% loss and high pings. So the problem is likely with your connection crapping out.
Mark_TVI 09-11-2003, 03:03 PM You tell me where the problem is....

piramida 09-11-2003, 03:15 PM The quota problem is actually CPanels problem, their /scripts/fixquotas script does not do what it should. Quotas are enabled in the system.
BobFarmer 09-11-2003, 04:25 PM His list accounts problem was because he had set 2 accounts as inactive. Meanwhile, we're looking for an actual error to duplicate.
APF firewall does install and block ports, cause it blocked me :-), not all features are supported by it from what I can tell.
Quotas do work but you can't check them in CPanel, which is kind of a pain but go into home directory and do a "du -h --max-depth=1" in your home directory and it will list all the user folders and their disk usage. You could write a Perl script to process that and email it to you daily, of course, I understand it stinks to have to do that.
The reason I post is you said you had issues with FTP! What kind of issues, I am having many many issues with FTP and it's starting to get annoying. I email support and ticket is open but no update for a few days, I need FTP now, so I switch FTP to pure-ftpd and it works, then a day or two later when I try to DOWNLOAD, not UPLOAD, I get error 450 in multiple FTP clients behind different firewalls and NO firewalls in different offices/homes with different ISP, so I know issue is not on my end. When it happen I switch back to proftpd and it work for a little bit then similar errors trying to DOWNLOAD data, not upload. Also PORT mode sometimes no work when PASV mode only work, I have no firewall on server with iptables flush and no firewall installed anyways.
Just was ftp'in and when going to folders I get this when just browsing folders, not even uploading/downloading files this time:
! Receive error: connection reset
! Failed "port":
!Retreive of folder listing failed (0).
And many similar type errors. Just restarted the ftp server, same issues. Today I'm using proftpd. Any help/reccomendation is appreciated.
Thanks,
kmsd
nickn 12-01-2003, 11:22 PM Wow..way to dig a post out of the stoneage. As far as the Quota issue, rumor has it..and yeah I'm saying the same thing which was said 3 months ago...Cpanel has said they are waiting on one file from SWsoft and quotas will display correctly again (eg: if you are a swsoft customer, call your rep and bother them about sending the quota rpm to nick at cpanel)
As for APF working, I've actually talked to the APF developers very recently, I believe it's a deeper issue..however they do have a VPS to toy around with now, maybe they can make it work :)
ScottD 12-01-2003, 11:42 PM The only thing CPanel really needs to do is keep the nightly updater from replacing the swsoft installed quota tools. I have a script that replaces the RPM in VPS's without any troubles, but it is definitely a hassle. I've been disappointed with CPanels response to this, having two tickets open with them now for several months.
Well, seems many issues on vps, still confusing for me that why buying VPS instead of dedicated though? since they are both unmanaged
eddy2099 12-02-2003, 07:42 AM In the not too distance past, there was a vast difference in terms of cost between a VPS and a full fledged Dedicated server but the pricing gap is pretty close right now.
eddy, servint VPS seems not managed then...for example, do they install firewall for you "proactively"? I know they do patches, servermatrix do it as well.
eddy2099 12-02-2003, 09:25 AM I am aware of that. I have experience with both hosts.
ultrafex 12-11-2003, 11:32 AM Servint does not install a firewall for you, they have no idea about which firewall script could work, they do not answer those kind of questions via email or in their private forum.
You're left alone to add some rules manually.
APF does not work since it blocks passive FTP and some other apps like wget. You cannot easily (if at all) define a range of ports that every application will use.
And about server management.
They'll install applications that you ask them to install if it's compatible with RH 7.3, but you will need your own update account @RH and you will need to run it daily.
As a summary, with a servint VPS, you will still need a sysadmin to configure everything for you and to regularely patch your system.
