Hello all,

Well, Time to search for a new web host. My current web host is CFMWebHost (CGI for me). (http://www.cfmwebhost.com) I have been most pleased with their service. My problem is that I am getting more and more into ASP and Cold Fusion, which they do not support at this time. They are more the *nix type people. (which is fine.... nothing against that). So I am moving on. They have good marks in my book. Uri is a good guy and if anyone needs assistance with them that is the man to talk to.

Having seen so many bits and pieces of other peoples experiance with new web hosts, I have decided to share my experiance here with the rest of you by keeping an online diary of sorts. I will share my experiances changing to a new host here. So for thoes that are interested read on...

Dear WHT,

Well, I just signed on with Technohosts and I thought I would let everyone know my experiances.

My initial opinion was a fairly good one. After doing a search on this and one other board, I checked my options and decided on Technohosts. Searching the boards, it came up with very few poor reviews. I do not think I know of any hosts that have had ONLY good reviews. And *&$# happens so I usually will not hold too much against a host.

Yesterday my roommate (helped me look) spoke with someone over humanclick at well past 10:30 PM EST. Getting support or ANYONE at all at that time of night is a plus in my book.

This morning I visited their web page myself...
Technohosts.com (http://www.technohosts.com)

Their web page layout was good and clean. They have a very large and informational site. Everything is easy to find and read. The features offered were well presented. I hate hosts that do not list their features offered or take the time to make a cheap 1-pager with little info....

I had a few more questions so I tried HumanClick for myself. (about 4PM EST) Within a few seconds I was talking to a Rep. Once again no wait.... good. The Rep was professional and able to answer all of my questions with ease.

After looking over the various plans they offer I decided to go with their Corperate Plan. The Package features more than meet my needs. The options are good and the price is right. The Corperate Plan, with its 500MB / 5GB bandwidth is good for my needs now. My websites are not high traffic, only large in size so the bandwidth is not an issue. And the price is right: $99.99 a year. Less than 10 bucks a month is right up my alley. They also have a demo area for their CP which is another plus for me. It is a valueable tool and theirs seem to have a lot of features.

You can see all of their plans here: Technohosts Plans (http://www.technohosts.com/plans.asp)

Though I am usually hesitant on paying for a years service up front like that I decided to give this one a try. The plan I choose is even cheaper than my old host! Will the service be just as good??? We will see...

The sign-up form was direct and to the point. Nothing fancy but it gets the job done. :) About 1 minute after submitting and being told my application was approved I recieved the usual autoresponder stating that I will be contacted with logon onformation as soon as my account was created. It also stated exactly how much I would be billed and how.

Their site says 48 hours for creation. My friend was told sometimes as fast as 12 hours (over human click) and I was told usually faster than 48 hours (human click).

So my initial contact has been great so far. The real test will be once they have my site set up. Then its congifure UBB, ASP, Databases, Cold Fusion and the talks with technical support.

Everything so far so good. I will keep this thread updated for all of you that may be interested in one persons opinion. For now... I wait :) Please feel free to leave your comments or questions.

Dear WHT,

After sleeping in very late from playing AC I awoke to find an email in my inbox from 8AM this morning.

"We have finished setting up your domain! Here is your information:"

Lets see... that took all of 16 hours. That is well short of their projected 48 hours. Yet once again they kept to what they said.
Great great!

Now that I have my settings I will get right to setting up my web page! Now the fun starts :)

Dear WHT,

Man do I hate waiting! Every time I actually want to WORK on my web page for a change, something always gets in the way. In my case... waiting for the DNS changes to go through the net......

*sighs*

Was playing with their CP. Lot of features. So many I needed help with them so I emailed asking where a help section was. Naturally, after sending the email the help section was in front of my nose the entire time. Bit me like the snake I didn't see......

*sighs again*

Dear WHT,

We have been having a few setup errors with the new site. The first batch of them (.ASP and .PL stopped working) was my fault. Trying to get a cgi-bin set up I killed the permissions for other things heh... (opps)

Got that fixed and now I have only 2 issues pending that erk me.

1. Any cgi file I upload gives an error

"%1 is not a valid Win32 Application" is all I see. Tried changing the way they were uploaded with no luck. This issue has been worked on since last Sunday and still isnt working :(

The rep I was in email chatting with was able to fix my other issues and thought the CGI was fixed.....

<<<email snip - 19AUG>>>
After I have had a chance to look at it myself, I will comment on what
you need to do...

I will look at the cgi tomorrow and respond at that time. You are
back to where you started for now at least. :-)

We think we have fixed your cgi problem. Please let me know if you
have any further trouble.

<<<<<<>>>>>>>>>>>>

Still no-go. So i emailed back on the 21st. Also just got done Chatting with the HumanClick rep <TechnoHosts> and was confirmed that it was a serverside error, but they couldnt assist me with a fix. So re-send another email it is.

The OTHER erk that is really driving me nuts is the permissions.
Im an amature when it comes to this. When you get your account you do not have a cgi-bin made. You must make it and set your own permissions. You get a userlist with users I had no idea what they were for. SYSTEM, mydomain_.web, Administrators,My acct and a few more. Which were the users? What permissions do I give the cgi-bin so it is more secure? Dont want people browsing or downloading the user/password list for my UBB :(

They should look into having a cgi-bin set up for people like me that have no clue what they are doing.

I am still going to haft to get the users figured out. Which are the web browsers etc etc.

Other than that things are working out very nicely. The speed is awsome, the CP has a million and 1 settings to mess up (;P) and support has been fast to answer.... just getting the problem fixed is taking a bit.

But, it is my initial set-up and I am not on a timeframe so I can be patient hehe. Just hoping the CGI issue doesnt hit the 1 week mark.

Dear WHT,

<ROBIN> (http://www.ForwardVelocity.com/robin.jpg) Holy CGI Error Batman!

CGI. Who would have known that little .cgi files could cause such a headache? After the last diary entry ^^^ , and completing my latest rough draft Flash Animation (http://www.ReadOrDie.com) :) <yeay>, I decided to give the HumanClick a try. Hey. It was 3AM why not right?

Let me tell you how very happy I was when I got an IMMEDIATE connect with technohosts at 3AM. Then let me tell you how even more happy I was when I found out I was talking with "Knox: I'm the sr. admin " :) Nothing like a pure computer geek that is playing games at work at 3AM ;)

Just Kidding about the game part.(i think) And maybe the geek part too :)
And actually he is just back from being away for a few days which explains the small wait part.

<1 hour later>

Ok just got done chatting and man am I lost. (not hard to do)
We checked everything and cannot seem to get the cgi to work. We tried uploading other CGI files to test them and they dont work either. We keep getting the same error:
"%1 is not a valid Win32 Application." Thats all it says. The .plworks fine... (I thought they are related?) Oh well.

Knox tried a few things server side and I did some looking on my end as well. But we kept getting Fragged by the CGI!:crying:
BAM! POW! ZAP!

ME ->:uzi: :dgrin:<-CGI

Damn the CGI... Damn the CGI.

Knox and I chatted for a while longer b4 calling it a night.
I re-assured him that this wasnt a rushrush thing for me.
Ok no biggie. Knox gave me his email address
(Mwa ha ha ha ha :eek3: )
and told me he would try a few things and talk to a few other people first thing tomorrow.

I am going to email a few friends to see what they think and we will go from there. Anyone out there have any opinions or seen
this error b4?

So I wait again. But thats ok because I feel like I got somewhere today. And im still happy over how the rough of my Flash turned out. It has been well over a year since I had even opened flash let alone try to make an animation. I guess it didn't turn out that bad. I see a few mistakes I will fix later on. Also need to add plugin detection and make a few animation changes. Take a look for your self and let me know what you think! http://www.ReadOrDie.com

Oh well. Almost 5AM. Time for bed.
