I was told they are rebooting a switch.

How long does it take to reboot a switch? I am at 45 minutes.

Same...1 of mines is down, the other ones working good.

I just called and it looks like they are now replacing the switch was told 10-15 minutes

That's my fault, sorry. Seriously.

I have been working with them on a packet loss problem on 12.96.164.xxx and 64.5.33.xxx since Sunday.

Normal pings @ 64 bytes were fine. Pings of 520 bytes and greater gave me 10-25% loss. Made for corrupt GIFs and JPEGs and all sorts of other problems.

Funny thing is, it didn't show up on dialup, only DSL. Dialup requested smaller packets (I guess) than broadband.

Anyway.

I'd been having similar issues. Hopefully this downtime rectifies the probs.

perroloco

Seriously!? Thank god. I was going insane trying to replicate the issue on other users' machines.

I couldn't connect via RDC -- it bombed due to encryption errors (bad data stream). And all my sites (2 servers) would render HORRIBLY, with corrupted images and broken HTML. Of course it looked fine to thePLanet's techs, even when they RDC'd into external boxes.

*whew*

Did it begin on Saturday? That was the first I noticed.

The only thing saving me from blaming my rig/connection was anybrowser.com -- this fantastic tool rendered the same type of errors as I saw, and was the only hard proof I had (until the larger packet pings today).

I have 10 boxes there, so my clients are/were the ones reporting sporadic PL and weird pings and all contained on the two subnets in question. This was unusual for these servers and I couldn't personally see anything wrong. I think it's more than coincidence that you had problems and the switch is now down for an exteneded period.

perroloco
09-10-2003, 08:29 PM
Nah, I just meant that it was my ticket they were working on, so I kicked off the chain of events that killed the switch.

Damn, it's been 1 hour. That's really unusual for thePlanet.

My company's time card system runs on one of my servers. 5:00 came rolling along and the phone went nuts with people wanting to punch out.

Didn't mean to imply anything there other than it seems to confirm that there is/was something more than "sun spots" that were causing problems.

Our main box has quite a bit of PL checking the others now

3 of ours are dropping packets.

i am sure you surmised that running a mission critical app on a server at a cheapo provider is not the best idea, right?

labeling theplanet as a cheapo datacenter is lame and shows that you probably haven't ever hosted with them.

So I would like to rebut your cheapo comment. Without a doubt one of the finest set of nice hardworking people working in a datacenter. I have done the rounds of datacenters and there is nothing cheapo about them.

Hmmm.. now 1 of 2 servers won't ping via Orbit. That's new.

Must have unplugged it for some reason. But why one and not the other?

Still getting some PL here, seems to be increasing. However its good to know they are already aware of the situation. I will check with orbit regarding the problem when the issue is resolved.

Agreed, ideafusion -- this is a RARE interruption in thePlanet's stellar service. The last outage I suffered was back in January, when I first signed up with them.

While I'm sure ServerMatrix has taxed the techs a bit, this event doesn't alter my satisfaction as a customer. At least, not yet. We'll see how long this event takes to rectify.

OK, both boxes are dead via Orbit. Somebody's re-routing cables or moving the servers to a new rack, I'd guess.

I have word that an upstream switch broke earlier today so it had to be replaced. The network then went up, but now it's down again.

The same as my server. Since in theplanet, my server has many down time. There is many problem, since hardisk failure, down without notice, apache failed etc-etcc

And they clain that the server is managed is not really true. They said that our server is monitoring, but if my server down, they dont do anything after I submit a ticket to check the server.

So..., I am rather doubt with theplanet now .......

Wow, that's not good. I can't complain -- this is the first problem I've had in 9 months, the last ocurring in the first day or two of my contract.

I'd renew my contract in a second. No hardware failures, no downtime (apart from restarts due to software installs). Couldn't be happier for the money.

This is the second month in theplanet. I dont know, perhaps their support is not enough to monitor all of their server since they launch servermatrix.

With all due respect. Unless you have full management at theplanet they are not obligated to fix your apache problems. Network uptime till today has been very good. Hard disk failures happen and cannot be predicted.

Hardware fails, and depending on the extent of the problem will depend on how much time it takes to rectify. Just be glad your server was up and only receiving packetloss. Im happy with the service we receive

Only receiving packetloss ?
No, I have lost all of the hd content, and to make it up again, need more than one day since I submit a ticket. I am lucky because I have backup all of our client data and our customer understand for this situation.

And for down time, i have try to discuss for the reason why our server have many downtime, but they just said their prediction without any problem solving, just restart server.

~4 hours down so far. No response to my ticket.

Many many customer complaints. Not what I need 3 days before my wedding :(

edit: now it seems to be up and running. hoorah!

I too am a very happy ThePlanet customer. I have had no downtime at ALL in the 10 months of service until today.

I called their critical support line, and was a little surprised to find a human answer the call within the first 2 rings. He told me of the Switch that was being worked upon (as an unplanned emergency thing), and that it would be up again soon. It was, and I'm happy again :)

I dont have mine managed at all, so I've no problems with them, and would gladly recommend them to anyone.

Servers are back up and running great per usual. That was the most "severe" hiccup I've experienced yet, so I guess I should consider myself lucky. No HDD failures, no bad RAM, no IP thieving, it's all good. Thanks, Jeff! I'm staying. :)
