I just started transfering files to my new pwebtech special server at the equinix noc. And I just transfered a 27MB file from my old site to the equinix server in less than a minute. Here is the prinout from ssh...
Using binary mode to transfer files.
ftp> mget with.tar.gz
mget with.tar.gz? y
200 PORT command successful.
150 Opening BINARY mode data connection for with.tar.gz (27546289 bytes).
226 Transfer complete.
27546289 bytes received in 54.1 secs (5e+02 Kbytes/sec)
I am new to dedicated servers but that speed is pretty amazing in my eyes...
Thanx pwebtech
and no I don't work for them or any relation other than a customer and a happy one at that...

Yes, that's good. But i downloaded a 8mb file in 3.89sec. with my server, located at VDI :D

Can my harddrive transfer a file that quickly? lol :)

Hi Guys, a newbie question here, are these the typical inter-server speed?
I was wondering what the slowest and fastest can possible be? and what are some factors involved?
Thanks,
Peter

Well, the lowest is obviously 0 if the server is down ;)
But seriously, some factors are:
- Servers Load
- Servers Specs
- Connectivity of both server
- Size of the file (a 100kb and 100MB file won't transfer at the same time heh)
- Capped connection or 100MBPS burstable?
Now, lets just say server 1 is connected thru 2 redundants OC-3 and server 2 thru 2 reduntants OC-12; the transfer will be fast. But if one the two server is connected thru a 56k, it won't be fast.
When you have fast NOC like VDI and NAC.net and you download a 8.5MB file from the UU.net FTP, it can't be anything else than fast. When i transfered a 30MB file from Verio to my server, it went fast too. So, yes, typical server-to-server speed. I am not saying that you won't go under 1MB/s or 100k/s though as it depends of many factors.
It's just like downloading with a cable modem or a DSL (kinds of), that's fast when the server you are downloading from is fast :)
I hope you understand what i am trying to say...not enough sleep "these" time :D :(

Yeah, I know what you mean Ericd. The download speed is restricted to the least bandwidth connection, so it wouldnt matter if you were downloading from a OC3 connection, while you only have a 56K connection.
Imagine if you had a OC3 connection and downloading from an OC3 connection eh? :D
