View Full Version : I repeat, do NOT use Hostany.com
turboweb 09-09-2003, 07:00 PM Server has been down for 12+ hours now. Support last answered my trouble ticket at 10:40 am EST and its now 7pm EST
The tech simply replied "i can get to your server from here" and that was it.
I'd updated the ticket with:
i can get to my servers through my static ip subnet for some of my ssl sites, but i can't get to my server through its main ip that all 170 virtual hosts are bound to.
i have posted traceroutes from the dozen of people who have helped and its pointing to a borked route and no one is answering my trouble tickets.
This is just CRAZY.
I'm goig to be cancelling my last two payments (anything within the last 30 days) and looking for another host as this is a joke.
Just expressing my experiences. I'd recommend against hostany simply because this isn't the first time they have done this. I gave them 1 too many chances to prove themselves and now i'm paying pretty badly.
anyone have any way to get ahold of these people?
takiman 09-09-2003, 07:15 PM They don't have any phone support. The only way to get a hold of them is through email.

They don't answer emails, trouble tickets or the voicemail that is in the whios info.
i wouldn't touch this company with a 10 foot pole
wheimeng 09-09-2003, 08:14 PM I thought you should have realised that since day 1 when they are in business.
I cancelled my server before the server has came up, I have waited for more than a week. I got fedup, thus cancelling it and they proclaimed that they have gotten it up 3 days before I have requested for refund. (which actually is a pure lie)
Good luck :)
turboweb 09-09-2003, 08:24 PM well, luckily the subnet my ssl sites are on isn't affected by whatever is happening,
I've since reconfigured all the domains to point to a new ip address, updated ensim config and ran EditVirtconfig on all sites to move svr3 to a different ip address on the same server and things are coming back up.
This atleast gets things running while i go look for another provider...
but if support would have looked at my issue it would have taken 30 seconds to look in there router tables and see what the hell is going on.
thanks
Taylor 09-09-2003, 08:38 PM They had such great looking deals, unfortunate the service end couldn't pull through. I almost bought a server from them myself untill i saw in the same offers post that customers were still waiting to get the box up after a week.
music 09-09-2003, 08:54 PM 500 plus posts and your just figuring out "HOSTANY" a company in business less than a year does not have it all figured out just yet.

Just because they haven't been an established business for a year doesn't mean they wont come in and provide top notch service.
Could have easily had experience with previous companies, divisions of this industry, whatever :)
The deals looked great, many people bought on their false promises which were also incredible looking.
VapoRub 09-09-2003, 09:12 PM maybe they need a business advisor.
Joshua 09-09-2003, 09:30 PM The owner of HostAny lives in Asia, and according to someone who has a cage in e200paul, has not been to the cage ever. The owner is from Hong Kong, however the workers are in San Francisco, we've 4 workers living just 5 minutes away from the datacenter and 1 network admin.
Been in business for almost 3 years, however we cannot tell you how many customers we've got, you can guess by what we've brought anyway, as many of you might already know, those 2 Cisco gear cost over US$80,000 even if it's second hand.
That was from http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=127379. They don't have people at the cage at all times, and are limited in staff. A HostAny tech posted some pictures a while back at DSLreports.com of the cage, but didn't mention the company name in the post, so I can't find it now (The lable on the cage door said HostAny, though).

daz884 09-09-2003, 09:40 PM Cant you find the company information through whois and call them?
Joshua 09-09-2003, 09:44 PM HostAny has a voicemail-only number. I don't think anybody here has been able to get through to a human on the phone through that number.
turboweb 09-09-2003, 09:58 PM yeah, no human on the number and apparently the techs they do have can't do much to debug connections (or care to do much)
Anyone have any recommendations for someone with a primo network?
When hostany worked it was nice, low latency and good speeds. Although as of lately i have had slower network access.
I think they're just slowly dying out.. and it will be a relief to move away from them.
oh well :(
Tazzman 09-09-2003, 10:44 PM Anyone have any recommendations for someone with a primo network?DV2 (tranxactglobal.com), Globalcompass (cyberwurx.com) and Nocster.
All seem to have good networks and support. You'll need to dig up the cyberwurx WHT promo URL to get the good pricing out of them, but I can assure you, they care about their customers, as I found out this weekend :)
I assumed you wanted East coast and in the same price range.

You should know that going in.
tubedogg 09-10-2003, 02:34 PM To be fair, Joe from GC contacted me privately to explain the situation with the blacklisted IPs and it seems to be (again) WA's fault at this point.
turboweb 09-10-2003, 03:52 PM Ahh.. now i got faces to the people that don't work :)
BTW, found out they were filtering my ip and the support guys didn't even know it until well into 24 hours of downtime.
:(

Choppy 09-10-2003, 09:47 PM Joe is a top lad at GC he has helped all our ded servers jump through the blacklisted period with not much trouble at all.
Time to keep growing :)

Phillip
I guess I'll be the minority, HostAny has an incredible network despite their terrible support. If I was to buy a ded server, I guarantee hostany would be my first choice.
If you or your customers can tolerate downtimes of 12 to 36 hours when you have server issues, go ahead. ;)
turboweb 09-11-2003, 01:41 AM Yeah, it took 24 hours for tech support to check there email and see that they had an issue with my server.
Techs only updated the ticket every 10 hours to say "looks good to me".
Sure, i've said it before.. the network & latency has been primo but my god, should you have any issues GOOD LUCK!
sprintserve 09-11-2003, 07:33 AM I'm goig to be cancelling my last two payments (anything within the last 30 days) and looking for another host as this is a joke.
I think it's quite unethical to be charging back the last 2 months charges just because of one downtime. I agree the support seems appalling and everything, but charging back the last 2 months would be to me a bad business practice for one downtime. You did pick them, and charging back 2 months is tantamount to frauding them in my books since you did use their services last month and probably this month (save the current issue)
Hostany Web 09-11-2003, 08:47 AM Byron,
Our upstream who own the IP block nullrouted your IP due to the fact your IP was doing illegal activity and we weren't informed, we then contacted nLayer and they replied us the reason, as they said, they nullrouted it immediately due to multiple complaints and we cannot do anything until you remove the sites.
Below is the cut and paste of the email from nLayer.
Regards,
Hostany Sales

Hi Byron,
Now that we've received notification that the incident has been taken care of and the account deleted, we can begin routing your IP again.
Notification was sent to HostAny's Abuse Department on September 8, 2003 at 13:47 UTC, asking that the matter be investigated immediately. Since we received multiple complaints, and because of the nature of the activity, we null-routed the IP immeditately to stop the illegal activity.
At that time HostAny should have contacted you directly to resolve the matter with you and your customer. nLayer has no access to or knowledge of HostAny's customer base. Per the terms of our Acceptable Usage Policy (http://www.nlayer.net/company/legal/aup/), it is HostAny's responsibility to contact you, and it is also their responsibility to contact us when the matter has been resolved so that we can begin routing the IP again.
We're sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused you; however, I'm sure you can understand the severity of this matter, and the need for immediate action on our part.
Sincerely,
--

Is it my imagination or is it what I see.... Hostany knew on 8th, didn't inform the customer and they posted this to stab their own feet?
jackpot101 09-11-2003, 09:30 PM Just contact ePaul if you need immediate support when your server goes down either to software or hardware related problems. That is what I do, get a person over the phone at epau, give them my server info and within 12 hours they have it fixed. usually instant if you call 'em at the right time. Email just doesn't seem to work
NationHosts 09-11-2003, 10:46 PM I've had little to no problems with hostany. I've only called their phone support once and that was when I first ordered a server from them because I was on vacation and had no access to my regular e-mail so had them send to a secondary e-mail. It was speedy and quick. Also hostany answers my tickets pretty quickly and e-mails as well, so as far as hearing problems about hostany, I don't understand it, maybe I just have good luck?

Well... I don't mean to be rude, but I think it's only a matter of time. I have this gut feeling that one day I will wake up and see a post from you on WHT about HostAny... "I've never had problems before! But my server has now been down for several hours..."
I, for one, hope that doesn't happen, as I know how awful it is to have your server go down and have no recourse. But with HostAny, you gamble that every single day. You're gambling that your server won't go down, and you're gambling that you'll get support when it does. I have seen too many of these posts about HostAny to think that you will be the exception to the rule for long.
Maybe you have been lucky. But you're like that guy who has that old 1981 Honda that hasn't broken yet. You keep telling everyone that it's been a great ride, and you shrug off others who have had similar problems. And then... one day... it dies. And you are left standing there on the side of the road with nothing.
It's only a matter of time. Like I said, I hope it never happens. But you're playing that same gamble that people with 20-year-old cars play every day. You maintain it well and hope that it doesn't break. But you know, inevitably, that it will.
The clock is ticking...

I think Murphy's Law will finally catch you though. Enjoy the ride while it last.
NationHosts 09-12-2003, 07:54 AM I will admit I've had one downtime asside from the scheduled downtime and a cpanel problem I had, both issues were resolved very quickly, that is why I have remained under hostany, if anything does happen though I always have a backup plan that is already setup and to take effect for any problems I may encounter in the future.

Heh. Glad to see I'm not the only one who feels that way. :)
