SoftWareRevue 08-15-2001, 08:00 PM Depends on what you're looking for in a computer.
Maybe you could tell us a little about your requirements.
Chicken was talking about a "Blue light special" a while ago that sounded like a good deal if your requirements weren't too high.
RunOfTheMill 08-15-2001, 08:03 PM well, i have not bought a computer in 5years
so im not sure whats 'in' these days.
I want something along these lines.
Basics
800+ CPU
20Gig HardDrive
256 RAM
To me, the rest is all complimentary, but i need everything
(Monitor, Video Card, Keyboard, MotherBoard, CD)
I was hoping to pay as little as possible (Im working with Canadian$)
Thanks
Trevor
WebSnail.net 08-15-2001, 08:20 PM I looked at this sort of thing recently for a friend who wanted a whole new machine...
In truth, if you buy all the bits yourself and put it together you will end up paying, much of the time the same as a pre-built system...
BUT...
On the up side, that's with the components you want
On the down side, without warranties except for the individual parts themselves.
I can't help you as far as Canada goes, but anyone thinking about it over in the UK... the pcindex.co.uk site is an absolute boon for finding the best deal on individual parts.
Just my 2 penneth worth.

What I probably should have done instead of get the gateway, which I love but still have no OS for, so I'm on the old one again, heh. It will get there, but ohhh well.
The big names have deals from time to time, dell, micro, gateway, etc.

Have some good looking bits. Build your own, its the only way :) and its relatively easy these days. Sure you only get basic 1 year warranty, but, these days, it aint worth much after 1 year anyway!
Aloha
another mwave vote
also pricewatch
as far as building your own box and waranty
a lot of times the retail or box (not oem versions) have longer waranties than a dell or something
also your parts are faster etc.. cause it is what ya want
dell hp etc... all run a lot of TRaSh so your box will be slower no matter what ya do compared with a hand raised and fed box
also building your own is very easy and you will get much more joy out of it
especially when your not so techy friends say
WOW you did it all form parts :D
of course they will call you all hours of the day and night asking for your computer expert advice ;)
heheheh
best of luck
build your own

Cyberpunk 08-16-2001, 09:46 PM Know what you mean.
I have taught all my friends to build their own. Most of em got the hang of it now. They still all ask about things though......(Couldnt stand another friend being told lies by "expert" salesmen, or worse just rubbish.)
I am known for having seen PC's do a lot of weird stuff, and having caused some :) , so you can imagine who gets the call.
Not complaining though, they all understand them a lot better, so they can judge if its a real fault, or just windows :D
Anyone ever seen the error: An unnamed file could not be found?

where in Canada, I might be able to suggest a company but need to know where. PM me if you wish. does not have to be exact, just rough general area. ie central ontario, southern quebec etc.

ShangIsBack 08-16-2001, 11:32 PM Take a look at http://buy-atlas.com rated top 5 cheapest computers from CNET, but the only bad thing is not too much documentation.
Who needs documentation?
Chris 08-16-2001, 11:52 PM where can I get some URL's for some canadian distributers? - or - us companies that don't charge a arm and a leg to ship to canada.
B-Broker 08-16-2001, 11:57 PM I know!

Kick @$$ computers (not to mention servers)...
RunOfTheMill 08-16-2001, 11:58 PM 130-175$ for Shipping.
No Thank You!
If it wasnt for that, the prices are surprisingly good.
