A customer of my, has a .com domain registered with a Host that is out of business since some days.

We need to change the DNS records, to be able to use the domain, but cannot contact the Host, because its bankrupt.

How can we find out where the name was registered, or how can we change the records for the domain the customer owns but cannot access ?

Go to http://www.networksolutions.com/ and do a whois search on the domain name. The search will show you the registrar. The registrar is the company that holds the domain reg. Then you customer will need to contact that Registrar directly and start the process of changing the hosts and contacts. This is not easy. If you are lucky you customer will 1. already be listed as the contact and even more lucky 2. Actually own the domain name and is listed as the Organization.

If i do that i get the next message:

The previous information has been obtained either directly from the
registrant or a registrar of the domain name other than Network Solutions.
Network Solutions, therefore, does not guarantee its accuracy or
completeness.

There are no clues where its registered, only that it was not networksolutions

The registrar name should be listed right under the Orginization listing. If not try this:

Do you have a unix server/shell account you can use? If yes then do this.

whois domain.com@whois.register.com

This should then tell you the registrars name.
