View Full Version : I just need webspace

I have several domains, just used for e-mail at the moment, any redirections I can point to an ISP webspace.

Now I'd like my own separate webspace, maybe with stuff like CGI, PHP, AGP etc. Something separate from the ISP and I don;t mind paying a reasonable sum for.

Can I get a hosting company to get me some webspace which I can then redirect my existing domains to, but at the same time not associate the webspace with a domain directly, i.e. have the domain on the host company DNS ?

Also, if I wanted to set up a game server, say like Quake3, would I need a dedicated host server or can it be done with a shared webspace ?

You could just redirect from your site to any webspace. I dont know how it is set up at your ISP but if you simply redirect using an IP address, the domain name will not be used.

Some of my clients have many pages in their main site and some
(especially database access) on different space which they access using the IP address. So when a user is redirected to the webspace all they see in the browser window is IP addresses and not the domain name. If the webspace redirection is done using a different domainnname, then that name will be visible.

If using IP addresses, any domain name may be used as a dummy to setup the space.

I doubt this will be effective using shared space. Nor do I think the Service Providers will allow it. Of course it is still possible using
bandwidth throttling, process cycling to protect other shared space users but this will reduce the usability..

Dedicated is the way to go though not all providers will allow this too.
