View Full Version : is mydomain.com any good
Abu Mami 08-15-2001, 10:39 AM Hi,
I did a search for mydomain.com on the WHT forums , but I came up with too many hits since so many people use mydomain.com as an example domain name. So...
What I'd like to know is: Is mydomain.com worth using? It's free and it seems to be really powerful. So does that mean that it's TGTBT (too good to be true)?
- Does anyone have experience with them?
- Are they stable? Or do they experience lots of downtime?
- Why should I use them, or why shouldn't I?
- Do they charge for exceeding traffic limits or whatever? Couldn't find this on their web site, so I guess not.
- Why should I use mydomain.com instead of the services offered by my registrar?
Umm, is that enough questions? Hopefully someone has some thoughts about this. I can't decide whether to give it a try or not. I'm always wary of the TGTBT syndrome.
Thanks in advance.
XTNet 08-15-2001, 11:14 AM I recommend... I have used them in the past... Works great for URL redirecting etc.
Free alternative to getting a pay host
ian54 08-15-2001, 11:33 AM I use mydomain.com for several of my domains, they are just a free redirection facility for both e-mail and URL, no hosting facilities.
AFAIK, you get unlimited e-mail redirections and URL redirection can be "hidden" or otherwise.
E-mail sent via the redirection is definitely slower, i.e. not near instantaneous, and I have had one problem in the past when they upgraded their mail redirection server and screwed up, I did not lose any mail tho.
All in all, reliable and free.
They do domain registration and hosting but go through namesdirect.com, so just reselling really.
Another one to consider is www.zoneedit.com, but they only offer free services for the first five domains, then it costs.
Scott 08-15-2001, 03:48 PM I have been using MyDomain for about 8 months and watched them long before that. I have a bunch of domains redirected to a common for sale info/page that is hosted on a Tripod account. So far they have been great!
tribby 08-15-2001, 08:09 PM I've been using My Domain for at least a couple of years now, and their service has never faultered. Superb.

Chicken 08-15-2001, 09:16 PM They've had bumps but their attention to the matter equals that of a paid service (in my opinion). Very good overall, plenty of options, and the price is certainly right.

Well, they also offer a service called myDNS. It too is free, does just about everything, and of course seems too good to be true.
i'm using them for over a year, 99.95% uptime ,
everything is excellent
BUT ....
they are going to split the services to a free one and a pay one,
i dont know what will be in the free one , but its a pity ....
they are real good, will see how much they will take.
about changing register.com panel , i dont recommend that, i never used register.com's panel but i heard its the same ...
you will want to use them if you have a lot of domains , and your host dont allow you to host them.
you wont want to use them if you have 1 domain and a pay hosting that supports domain and you dont need anything extra that your host doesnt allow (like MX update etc.) or if you have dedicated server .

Well, that's what I was afraid of. I like free Internet services, and I've used (and appreciated) many over the years. However, I've also been burned too many times by free services becoming pay services or just shutting down (eg. having to move my mailing lists from listbot to another service :(, what a pain). I now try to do as much on my own as I can, or just pay.
I guess I'll just stay away from them at least for now. They want to make a buck, and who can blame them.
Thanks.

Where did you get this information? I would really like to read about this, as I have been using them for a long time, and am interested. I use them so I don't have to pay for subdomains, as my web hosting plan does not include them, but rather offers them as an extra charge.
Thanks,
Shawn
Chicken 08-17-2001, 09:47 PM Mydomain has been saying, since ever I remember, that they were going to start charging for certain services. Now I'm not saying they won't ever, just that mydns used to be a 30 day trial. They never contacted anyone after 30 days and it really just confused people, heh.
One day they'll charge, *you'd think*. If you look at what they offer, you'd wonder why they *haven't* been charging...
