can anyone recommend:
1) domain name company - i've got network solutions in mind at the moment
2) web hosting company -site5.com in mind
reliability is crucial

1) Godaddy, but you will probably get a lot of recommendations for ev1servers.net because of their price.
2) Hard to make a recommendation without knowing a price range or requirements.

1) what's the catch
2) site 5's shared hosting basic package
You can't go wrong with domains @ namecheap.com
Good price, great control panel.

1) No catch. Just good prices.
2) It's nice to see someone with realistic expectations for pricing.
Most of the hosts on the list in this thread would probably help you. Pick a few and send some emails to see what the response times are.

Good advice Blue (do you ever sleep?).
I'd also add, be sure to email those companies on your short list to see how they respond to you. If they respond slowly there's a good chance their support responds at the same pace.
Asking presales questions is a good indicator of how a company will deal with you.
Cheers
