Hi,

Hope this is the right forum for this, but--

I want to buy a very cheap computer w/monitor so I can install Linux on it and fool around a bit. I just want to get some experience installing and configuring Apache, etc.

Anyone have any ideas where I could go about getting a good deal for something like this? I have no idea what kind of hardware Linux can run on...

I'm thinking maybe a hacked I-Opener internet appliance is the cheapest way to go?

Thanks-
Jeremy

Why not use your current PC to install linux on.
Partition it and install linux.

I eventually want to have this computer running 24 hours a day, so a separate partition isn't really an option :unhappy:

Check ebay, plenty of cheap computers there. I also like pcconnection.com, their referbished ones, but ebay is still cheaper.

Linux's minimal requirements are very minimal. I had a 486DX w/ 40 megs of RAM running Red Hat 6.2 just fine (a little slow, but it wasn't too bad for most things). Installing large applications may take over night to complete, but once it was installed it ran pretty smoothly. It's all uphill from there. I recommend a Pentium-class machine -- even a Pentium 60 should be fine for tinkering with it. A cdrom, a floppy, and at least a 1 gig hd (to hold OS, apps, and extra stuff) would be ideal as well.

Ah, nice. I didn't realize the requirements were so low. Thanks for the suggestions everyone!
