View Full Version : Wireless Ethernet Internet
RossH 09-04-2003, 05:34 AM Well guys it seems DSL & cable are at their limits. My cable internet provider charter is kinda crappy and their speed is not the best. I was reading about technologies and wireless thernet seems to be the future. Does anyone have any information on this technology and any ISPs that are starting to use it? Are there any better technologies?
Hmmm you are kind of all over the place there dk2. You can get providers to install a higher speed connection however this will be very expensive indeed, and if you are a high internet user your bandwidth *may* be limited or charged in relation to use.
I've never heard of Wireless Ethernet Internet, and as such perhaps you have it confused with Wireless Ethernet? At the moment wireless solutions are very much in the home, and I haven't heard of any plans to extend internet access like a radio signal, although it certainly would be useful :).
Also when you complain about speed, remember that it can usually be attributed to the server you are connecting to, and may not be your ISPs problem. Cable is starting to get old, and we hope that another feasible home-user solution will be just around the corner, but until then the better connections are reserved for either the very "financially secure" or the "well connected".
jayjay 09-04-2003, 06:26 AM mmm...wireless is awesome. : )
Anyways though, they're all pretty expensive right now unless you live in a big city (NYC, Seattle, Dallas (?), and a few others) The connectivity is pretty good too, however it's really shared.
I've heard problems about when it rains and similar things that the connection will dropped, mine hasn't /yet/.. it drops about 50kb/sec or more though.
IMHO, Save your money and wait a few.

Stable 09-04-2003, 06:57 AM DSL is far from it's limits... ADSL version2 is getting closer every day and it will be much better, able to go further from the CO and also capable of much higher speeds. I also know that a lot of electric companies are gearing up to offer Internet service over your electric wires! IP over Romex - should be interesting! There is actually a company down in Georgia already testing this out. Guess it may not be a great thing for us New Yorkers if we keep losing our power. ;)
Basically wireless is gonna be far from the ideal solution, for a while anyway. Though there is an ISP in Aspen Colorado that provides FREE wireless access to people within their range using some old russian satalites and just standard 802.11 adapters. I've never used a wireless internet connection myself, but I know people who have and they just complain about latency, especially during ssh sessions. Not saying I'd turn down a wireless DS3 though. :D
I think DSL will make a comeback and maybe even overtake cable after ADSL2 is released.

I haven't had any problems with latency. Espically in shells, I have more than I can count too. : )
It takes three hops until I'm out of the internal network.
Hop #1: 1ms (Local Routing Device)
Hop #2: 5ms
Hop #3: 10ms
I'm not very far from everything though..
(Those are average, sometimes it's lower. Sometimes a few ms higher.)
Stable 09-04-2003, 07:38 AM Hmmm... sure, but it helps when you're a datacenter providing the bandwidth yourself. ;)

jayjay 09-04-2003, 07:55 AM hehe :)
Yeah, I know a few guys who run wireless ISP's with T1's. It's HORRIBLE. : ) Stable connections usually though.
Well you learn something new everyday :). Sounds a little strange because I would imagine most people interested in wireless would be remote, and very far from cities where cable or DSL wasn't an option. Does anyone know the avarage speed you are picking up with these connections?
Stable 09-04-2003, 08:10 AM Well most of the wireless connections that will be available in these areas will be via something like direcpc(satalite). So how far from a city wont really matter, not like that city is gonna be too much closer to the satalite, unless you know the Jetsons. :D
Either way, right now at about $80/mo it's way overpriced and the download speed is only 400k. I think the upload is 128, but not positive.

The only reason I am not using wireless ethernet internet is because of security reasons.
I use a WLAN at home now, I know it's moderately secure because I configured everything myself.
But when using wireless applications provided and configured by a company, I do not know if they made it secure enough .
And when the weather is bad, transmission rates will drop.
