View Full Version : Data Packet Network: too good to be true?
DeNasio 08-14-2001, 03:14 PM Has anyone checked out Data Packet Network (http://www.datapacket.net/hosting.htm)? It sounds too good to be true! I love their Virtual Private Server, just look at the features! It's just like a dedicated server but just much more cheaper. I've been looking for a cheap dedicated server for a long time, maybe this is my solution?
Anyone has experience with them?
UmBillyCord 08-14-2001, 03:46 PM If you use these guys, make sure to take a screen cap of their Terms and "No bandwidth fees ever!" statement. That way when you add 100 domains and use a few hundred gigs of transfer, they can not just drop you and bill for bandwidth. These guys flat out say "No bandwidth fees ever!" on their palns.
I am guessing this will be removed in a month or two. :D

I remember that Hypermart also offered "unmetered data transfer". They even had a slogan like "all the bandwith that you can eat" or something like that. But they changed their terms of service and although I signed up when they offered "unmetered data transfer", I had to choose between accepting their new terms or being kicked off the server!
So I never thrust it when they say "unmetered data transfer"! But this plan is really attractive!!
UmBillyCord 08-14-2001, 04:14 PM Point is that they say no bandwidth fees ever. That means you will never have fees - *ever*. Even if they change the terms.
To me these guys are too new to understand what they are doing by offering something like that.

What do you suggest? Signup before they change their terms?
MCHost-Marc 08-14-2001, 04:32 PM Do a search about them here on the forums :)

I am saying that if after you do your research, and everything looks good, then make sure to get a copy of that feature/'advertisement' for "No bandwidth fees ever!" That way, you at least protect yourself as much as possible from the surprise bandwidth fee.
B-Broker 08-14-2001, 05:07 PM If it sounds too good to be true...it probably is...
<<MOD EDIT: Please refrain from mentioning ***** in every post you make.>>
They actually removed my friend reseller account . Just the same as what UmBillyCord had said.
"you add 100 domains and use a few hundred gigs of transfer, they can not just drop you and bill for bandwidth."
"I am guessing this will be removed in a month or two. " - definitely yes. One month, and my friend NT hosting is gone.
m0rph3us 08-14-2001, 08:01 PM This is from their TOS:
5.6 Un-metered bandwidth constitutes; that DPN will not limit or throttle bandwidth to any customers site. All sites on DPN servers have full speed access to a dedicated port . High bandwidth sites with heavy scripting may violate section 5.4 and or section 6.1 of this agreement, therefore the customer must make sure the CPU and or MEMORY usage on their site is not deemed excessive
What if that port was capped at 128kbps =)
Any site that uses a high amount of bandwidth will slow down the server somewhat so they can kick you based on their TOS that you are slowing down the server, not that you are using excessive bandwidth.
UmBillyCord 08-14-2001, 08:14 PM True, but if they have Linux, you can have them take a screen shot of Top showing whether this is BS or not. Anytime we get high use sites, we take screen caps and show the customer.
XTNet 08-15-2001, 09:25 AM Im sure the bandwith is capped. Not a host in the world can offer unlimited bandwith for $40 a month without losing money.
128k sounds like a good number, runs around $40... If you take a look at , http://hosting.adultcentral.com/ they have capped bandwith accounts.
Oh and by the way, for a even moderatly large website, 128k is NOT fast enough... Its terrible.
