I've registered mydomain.com & mydomain.net. I'm planning on going with the .net for nameservers. Do I need to register ns1.mydomain.net, ns2.mydomain.net, ns3.etc?

Thanks, Tom

If you are planning to use ns1.mydomain.net and ns2.mydomain.net , yes you will need to create the entry for name server at your domain name registrar. You just need to provide them with the IP address and the domain name. Basically it is just creating a name server based on an existing domain name, there should not be an extra charge and you do not need to register those.

Make sure that on your server the details correlates to the details you provide your domain name registrar.

You need a minimum of two nameservers: ns1.mydomain.net and ns2.mydomain.net. These are not new domain names to be registered separately, but rather they need to be created in the control panel at your registrar for mydomain.net. Most registrars have automated this process, but with some you have to ask them to create your nameserver names for you. You will need a unique IP address number for each of your nameservers (usually obtained from your hosting vendor). Best of Luck! ;)

So then there's no danger of, for example, someone else registering ns3.mydomain.net if I only register ns1 & ns2? Since mydomain.net is safely mine, ns to the nth are also safely mine. I just need to make certain that I register them in order to use them?

When you look at it, these are actually subdomains of your main domain (i.e.-mydomain.net) Therefore no one else can register ns1.mydomain.net or ns9.mydomain.net just like they cannot register: subdirectory1.mydomain.net . Your safe...

Got it, thanks! Now that I got the hard questions out of the way, all I gotta worry about is the easy stuff like hackers & spammers & charge backs & such.
