View Full Version : COLO vs. Dedicated
dbzgod 08-13-2001, 08:49 PM I am starting a hosting company and wan't to know this.
Is it better to go co located with my own server or just getting a dedicated server. I need at least 150gb transfer on a budget of $150 a month.
I have seen advertised $0.50 per gb bandwith on colo.
What is better? I will be using a lot of My Sql space and bandwith. Unix/linux os.
Anyone know of a good host for me?? PHP4, cgi, my sql, the works. At least 30gb hd and 256 ram more if possible.
Planet Z 08-13-2001, 08:56 PM I wouldn't get ANYTHING at a place where bandwidth is 50 cents a GB.
dbzgod 08-13-2001, 09:01 PM Well I am on budget of $1,450 a year. I would buy my own server and all and colo it as long as I could get at least 200gb bandwith a month for under 1450 a year.
mikeknoxv 08-13-2001, 09:49 PM dbzgod,
Good luck! ;) Are you considering any profit from your business(es)?
(SH)Saeed 08-13-2001, 09:57 PM If you can afford to buy a server and then send it in for colocation, then that is offcourse a better and cheaper choice. However, if you don't have enough money to buy a server, you could get a dedicated for a couple of hundred per month.
If you need lots of bandwidth, then take a look at www.rackshack.net - They are offerin RaQ4 with 300GB bandwidth for $99/month.
davidb 08-13-2001, 10:56 PM I chose colo because thats the only thing I have done. I like it being my own server and got a nice deal at ebay for both of em.
Synergy 08-14-2001, 12:01 AM With your 1450, its a pretty tight budget so I would consider dedicated.
Dollac 08-14-2001, 01:07 AM As far as I am concern nothing bets colo, but you have to have the money to do it.
(a) as far as the price of $0.50, I would be a little concerned. True I have seen the cost in the $0.60 per GB range but that is with 100% usuage of 200 Mbps.
(b) as far as the server goes, think about leasing you can get a direct from the factory server that cost $2,500 for around $150 per month (OAC ofcourse) with a 24 month lease with a $1 buyout option at the end. That price goes up and down depending on the server.

Brian Farkas 08-14-2001, 01:53 AM Both have advantages and disadvantages...
If you can afford the startup costs and know a solid amount of unix, go for co-location, as it will save you money in the long run.
If you need support or don't have the initial startup costs available, I'd lean more towards a dedicated (leased) server.
It would be nice if more companies offered lease-to-own programs, the only one I've seen that does this so far is superb.net.

yes was there but only if you buy 40 Gbps - OC-768 connection.
:D
mahinder 08-14-2001, 04:03 AM if you want to colo then either you need to build your server or puchase one. on overall deal you may only save few dollars. i think you should go with rackshake.net they have pretty hot deals these days.
cheeerssss.

dbzgod 08-14-2001, 12:42 PM I kinda hate Raq's because they have a slow CPU and can't handle My SQL good. My budget is probably going up to $2,900 a year and I could get a server if needed for colo at no cost in my budget.
I did plan on making profit from buisness at a server at $1,600 I had figured how I could with 275gb bandwith and 25gb space. I would be making exactly $1,975 if I got everything at $1,600 a year with 275gb bandwith and 25gb space. Also the profit would be after the server was paid for for the year. So really I would be making over $3,600 really.
Just a number game. Anyone that knows where I could get a dedicated server at $3,000 per year or less with at least 250gb bandwith and 30gb space with unix/linux I would be grateful ^_^. Also I need WHM/CPanel.
I have been looking into Colocation as most of them I have looked at charge by how much bandwith you use. That would make it if I use 200gb bandwith a month they would charge something like $400 a month. I would be able to make this back through clients:)
If you could lead me to a good colocation provider that charges by gb usage a month Iwould be grateful^_^
WHM/CPanel would be a nice perk. I could install PHP, My SQL, and CGI probably on my own. I don't own a copy of Linux Redhat myself. Would I need to install this on my own also? How about PHP, My SQL, CGI, WHM/CPanel, and all the other stuff. Will that need to be installed by me?
Also where could I get a server for colo with at least 40gb space? 512mb ram the works.
Thx,
Dbzgod

ho247 08-20-2001, 09:57 AM You could try WebWorks (http://www.dtwebworks.com/), speak to a sales person there and they might be able to help you out. Their prices are very low, but their networks/connections are very fast.
