I came upon an interesting site to buy and sell hosting clients - called http://www.growthorchard.com.

Looks good - anyone used it?

Reason?

Seems fair enough to me if you wanna buy or sell your clients.

While corporate takeovers and buyouts are a fact of the business world, often due to financial insolvency on the part of the purchased company - selling all or a portion of your customer base strikes me as somewhat unethical.

A client has chosen company X to deal with, not company Y. I don't know about anyone else but if I went with Xhosting and found myself suddenly being served by Yhost I would not only find a new host but would chargeback any prepaid service remaining from Xhosting due to breach of contract and non-provision of services.

The only way this could possibly be considered ethical is if the client consented to their account being sold.

True, but its the way business is done. Look at all of the recent take overs...

I suppose if hosting X provides the same or better services than hosting Y, AND stopped customers of hosting Y receiving any downtime, then i'd stay with them...

I think thats upto the individual, but its an idea to have an outlet to sell your company if you're in financial trouble or looking at a different direction....

I don't disagree with your point, really, but of course any client wouldn't be obligated to stay on after their account was sold. Unlike, for example, a loan agreement where generally there is a clause allowing for the loan to be sold or "reassigned," I've never seen a hosting agreement with a provision that would enforce even your continuation through the terms of an annual contract (although, on the other hand, it is a common part of DSL contracts).

So while it would be inconvenient to have to find a new provider, it could be better than the alternative -- which might just be your current provider suddenly closing down.

I guess what you're really getting at is that hosts or ISPs might be buying and selling groups of clients sort of like at the stock exchange, shuffling customers around while remaining in business, but I don't see that as a likely scenario.

Interesting concept and a good service if they help handle all the legal stuff, etc. sorta of like someone looking over your shoulder to point out any mistakes. :smokin:

actually a court has stated that if say hosta purchased hostb that hostb customers if on a contract or pre paid have to honor it and/or not entitled to a refund. This happened when Earthlink purchased(I think it was onemain customers) some of them had Earthlink in the past and didnt want to use them but they were forced too. I would imagine yahoo probably has some stories on it from before...this was about a year ago i think when it happened
