I would like to get my own merchant account. I have researched quite a few, but it comes down to experience with them. It would really help me if I could hear from others about their experiences.

I would like to go with someone that has access to a good gateway. I will be using this merchant account for web hosting and would also like to use it for sales of a software product.

I'm NOT looking for a 3rd party payment provider, but a true merchant account. Any and ALL recommendations welcome!!

I won't go bloating about other merchant account providers I do not have experience with. We have been with Cardservice Intl. for about a year now and absolutely no problems so far. They provide you with a linkpoint gateway, which you can use to manually charge your customers using their interface or integrate it in your web site using the API's they provide.

... comes to about $50 a month + per transaction commision.

If you are comparing the PRICES of true merchant accounts, you should take a look at the link in my signature. Many people on this forum have already found it to be very useful.

I downloaded your spreadsheet and it was very helpfull as far as price is concerned. What I need to know is about peoples actual experience with these merchant accounts. For me, price alone is not the determining factor. Like they say, You get what you pay for.

Currently, I am having a good eperience with Paynet Merchant Services(I think it is Total Merchant Services on the SS)

I am just starting to setup, but everything is moving along fairly quickly

Not a problem...I was just trying to offer information I had. Currently using PayPal myself, and am looking at PSiGate long and hard. They have been really good answering questions and such, and their prices are okay.
